FYI - Hair Loss

Just wanted to share my experience with hair loss.

I had hair loss at about 4 months.  Everyone kept on saying are you getting you protein?  At the time and even today I consume 90 to 120g of protein a day.  I had a lot of hair in the first place and no one else seemed too noticed but it drove me directly to my doctor.  My hair was always one of my best features.  She checked my Ferritin levels.  Ferrtin is a protein that binds to iron.  Mine were really low, but not below scale.  The scale is 4-136, my results were 19.   Levels should be about 78-80. She prescribed liquid iron, Ferrous Sulfate 220/5 ML EXL. She recommended liquid to help my body absorb it easier.  I take two tablespoons a day plus vitamin C which helps your body absorb the iron.  My bariatric doctor prescribed biotin (1000 mg) and zinc.  6 months later my hair is as thick as ever and my levels are up to about 45.  I will have them checked again at about 1 year out, in March.  Another FYI, liquid iron taste gross but I love my hair, my biggest vanity.

So do you think it a combination of everything that made it better? Iron, vitC, biotin AND zinc? Did you start all of them at once?

Yes, I think it was a combination of everything especially since my ferritin was so low.  I know others that have been taking the zinc and biotin since before their surgery and still lost hair.  My dermatologist said the hair loss could also be due to stress to the body.  She said that people who have lost a job or a loved one have similar hair loss due to the stress.
I am glad I covered all my basis.  My hair in 4 months has grown a lot, 1 1/2 - 2 inches.

I had hair loss after having both my kids about 3 months afterwards. I equated it to all the hormones and nutrients my body had circulating =)

I'll have to check my bloodwork levels to see where everything is at.

Thanks!

Is the liquid iron only by prescription? I have the same problem and I have been taking iron but I am afraid I am not abosorbing it. I was pretty sure my hair loss had to do with iron.

Yes, the liquid iron is by prescription.  I have not seen it over the counter in any stores.

Hair and nails are a luxury :o)  Isn’t the body amazing?
