Surgery Cancled after Started in O/R
hi guys, i just wanted to let everyone know that i was first surgery this morning with dr o'rourke, everything went as scheduled up until the second incision. with the camera and one tool inserted . the dr did not like the look of my liver. he thought it wasnt a good decision to go ahead with the surgery. i guess my liver was more fatty than he originally thought. so they took a biopsy and will wait until the results come back. and make the decision to go forward.

peggy, no they did not do a scan, plus they knew my liver enzymes were high for the past year and a half. and that i had been diagnosed with a fatty liver from my regular dr..... i am so mad about it. i just want to cry and cry and yell . but i know it just wasnt meant to be that day. i believe things happen for a reason and that it will all work out somehow . oh ya, also . my surgeon called me today and told me after looking at my liver yesterday and thinking about how he has had bad outcomes with people who have cirrhosis of the liver and going over a few more things. he then told me that i was no longer a good "canidate" for wls because of my liver disease. and that i should just resolve to other weight loss methods like diet and excericise. but that he knows how hard it is for me to lose weight on my own, he suggested that i see a nutt, and someother b/s.....yadda yadda yadda....all i wanted to do is jump through the phone and slap him......i thought wl surgery was the best thing for a fatty liver, and that it helped it from progressing and so on. my mothers surgeon dr flanigan for eugene , said she had the fatty liver just like i do and that she was a stage 3 Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and he still did her surgery, and same thing with two aunts and a cousin.... so i think he was just not skilled enough in that area and panicked or something....

Sandra, Hi - I'm new on here but I just had to tell you how sorry I was that you had to go through waking up to no bypass.. That's my worst fear. It really doesn't sound quite right for the doc to stop halfway through the procedure. Maybe you should talk to someone else. I'd be just as mad as you are! After all we go through to get to the point of surgery, we expect to wake up with the procedure completed. Don't give up.

Sandra - I am sorry this happened to you, it would be a huge bummer to awaken from surgery to find out nothing was done. However, I am glad they held off if they thought it wasn't safe to proceed...it could have been devastating had they proceeded and you had major complications down the road. Hopefully everything will turn out OK and they can get you back to the OR and get it done. Keep your chin up!
