Did I REALLY get a bypass?

Hi, folks.  I'm just confused.  I had my lap RNY on Monday, April 13 in Springfield, and came home the next day.  My "innards" are sore, not where the incisions are, but lower and off to the left side.  I can't tell when I'm full, and I was drinking a protein shake and realized I had drunk ALL of it...with no...repercussions.  They told me I would not feel hungry.  I'm starving.  They said I'd have to remind myself to eat....I have to force myself to stop.  I'm still doing the liquid/soft food diet (for another 8 days or so), so this morning I had a carton of yogurt (4 oz.).  Still hungry so a couple of hours later I fixed cream of wheat, with Splenda.  Ate probably a cup of that at least.  This just repeats what I've been doing.  Now I worry that I'm hurting my new "pouch" or that something has gone wrong.

Anyone else experience anything like this?  Thanks.

Drinking a shake might not have any repercussions because the liquid just goes through very quickly.

The hunger comes from the "other" tummy, not your new pouch.  It will probably still get the hungries until it goes away.  My RNY made me immediately NOT hungry;  maybe your vagus nerve wasn't affected the way mine was.  The vagus nerve is what gives the hungry signal to our brain.

We're all different;  I'd suggest not eating cream of wheat due to the white carbs which will trigger more need to eat.  If you need to eat again, try using a greek yoghurt with splenda or some fresh fruit.  Higher protein, no white carbs.

Also, just having another protein shake would be an option.

This is all new and wonderful, and your solution should be as personal as you need it to be.

Good luck!

I too wondered if they did anything but poke holes in me. Then I got sick a few times and learned. It may not feel different until you eat solids. I am struggling too so I don't have a magic pill but do eat protiene.
Also I think you are supposed to eat every couple hours. Dont try to have just 3 meals a day.

Thanks, Lynn--the C of Wheat was one of the few allowed foods, which is why I tried it.  Haven't since though.  I am still hungry, but it isn't as overpowering.  I've learned to supplement with sugar-free popsicles, which improves the hydration too.  Dr. said I could have scrambled eggs, so do that maybe once a day or every other day (not a super egg fan).  Thanks for the input.  We'll see how it goes....

Hi, again, everyone.  Well, I'm now about 11-12 days post op.  Had some really bad days about a week post op, but everything is starting to settle down now.  My doc said to try some scrambled eggs and I found I can eat 1 to 1-1/2 before I'm pretty full.  They want us to stick to 3 "meals" per day, but that went by the wayside pretty quickly.  I usually get up, take my daily meds, have some fluid, then midmorning I have a protein shake.  I am tripling up on the amount of powder (so about 70-80 g per shake) and that has helped I think.  Also trying to do 2 shakes per day.  I still get light-headed when I go out to do errands, but I figure it will take a bit to build back up.  I also tried a bite of refried beans today (reportedly a good first first after the shake period) even though I'm a couple of days early.  I stlll feel hungry and when I do eat or drink, my stomach growls and snarls for about 30 minutes or so.  Hopefully that little embarrasment will go away.  I'm feeling much more positive now, and looking forward to "real" food in the not too distant future.  We were told to reintroduce foods one at a time to see how we react.  My first will be turkey breast probably, maybe I'll try the beans again since they have done well by me (though hard to tell with only 1 teaspoon or less).

What foods did others of you start with and how did they work out for you?

Thanks.

I had surgery Feb 13th I have lost roughly 22 pounds. I am also recovering from ACL surgery. I had that March 20. I slipped on the ice we had in December and just tore up my knee.  I can eat more now and it is a challenge. I hope in the next couple of months to be able to aerobic activity. I can't really do much now besides physical thereapy. I think I started with eggs but I don't really remember. I still think sugar free popsicles are the best thing ever invented.

Oh, I TOTALLY agree about the popsickles (except for the grapes ones--ewww!).  They have been a real help.  Seems like 22 lbs in 2 months is pretty good.  I know my weight loss will slow down soon, can't keep doing a lb a day I'm sure.

I did have my first "normal" blood sugar today (77 and headed down, so I had to eat a yogurt), so that was exciting since that was my primary goal, the weight loss being (excuse the expression) the frosting on the cake.
