Any idea on how much a finance payment per month is for self payers...

So, I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to pay the majority of my procedure with my own, my mom & dad's own and my husband's own hard earned money! My insurance will cover the sleep study and probably some blood work, but I just got hit with the numbers of around $20,000. I did a little crying and asked how I was going to be able to do it, but somehow it will be done. My family is strong and we can come up with this. I was given a name of a finance company for WLS. I was curious how much payments run for most... with probably 60 month financing. $300? more?

I know I'm a needy gal lately on these message boards, but I sure appreciate all the awesome people who write me back! I truely appreciate it!

Lots of Love....

Not sure where or with who you have decided to have your surgery, but you may want to consider Bay Bariatrics in Coos Bay.  They do lapband for, I think, it is 12K......I know several people who have chosen Dr. T for their surgeon and have been pleased.

Just a thought!

I am also a self pay patient.  Mine came out to right around $18,000 including the sleep study.  I ended up getting a home equity line so my payments aren't set.  I think your estimate of around $300 would be correct.

What clinic are you going through?  I am with OWLS.  They do surgery here in Portland and also in Vancouver.  It is cheaper for some reason to have the surgery in Vancouver.  Also, I can't say enough good things about the staff and care I recieved there.  It's a brand new facility.

Hi Jennifer! i don't know what area of OR you are in, but I am from the PDX area and HIGHLY RECOMMEND that long drive down to Coos Bay for your surgery. I first contacted them in mid-Oct, and had my surgery Nov 9 last year! My main reason for surgery (besides the obvious) was to start baby making and I wanted to have surgery ASAP as I am not getting any younger. If you can get your PCP to do some of your testing, Dr Tersigni accepts those results, and I was in reasonably good health for being almost 300 lbs, so no sleep study or unnecessary tests were needed. It cost us about 11,000.00 total out of pocket, and some of that is a tax write off. Good luck to you girl!!

Let me chime in as another one *****commends Dr T in Coos Bay. I had my RNY there in May for 25k - self pay. Lap is 12k. He's great, as is everyone in his office.

Before that though, I would maybe ask around here about insurance appeal letters or information if you've been denied.

If you have to do self pay, I think I remember a good rule of thumb for loan payments was $20 for every thousand. That of course depends on your interest rate. But using that calculation, it would probably be closer to $400/month.

A lot of us who are self-pay patients also end up going out of country for surgery - here in Oregon there are scads (like thousands upon thousands) of us!  Insurance in our corner of the world is not the greatest!

I had my DS with Dr. Baltasar in Alcoy, Spain a little over 6 years ago - with travel, 19 days in Spain, including a week in a rented apartment on the Mediterranean, food, surgery, everything - $15,800.

There are excellent surgeons all over the world offering very affordable surgery - the key is to do your homework and choose the best surgery and surgeon for you!  If you haven't found it yet - www.duodenalswitch.com has a great listing of surgeons.  It's based on patient outcomes and satisfaction - not advertising dollars.

If you ever want to chat with someone who has been there/done that - drop me a line, okay?

Blessings,

dina

When I was looking into being a self-pay patient I was approved for $25,000 and the payments were going to be almost $600 per month for 60 months (the range was $534-$757 depending on the interest rate). I ended up waiting and going through my insurance 2 yrs later.

In Seattle I was going to go to NW Hospital which at the time was not a center of excellence and they were charging $23,000 for a lap RNY.  At the UW Medical Center they were charging $33,000 for the same procedure (and they are a center of excellence).

Also, make sure to ask what post-op care is incl in the cost and how many nights in the hospital it covers (at NW Hospital the surgeon's visits were covered for the first 3 months, not sure with UW).

Good luck

If you are looking for lower prices, head south to Mexico.  I am getting a lappband for $7000.00 and the price of an airline ticket.  I set my date for what works for me.  Nutrition and counseling assistance will help you reach your goal. Research everything.  You can never have too much information.
