Post Op Question 8 days out
I had gastric bypass last Tuesday (July 29), and feel like I may be eating too much. I am trying to stick to what they gave me in hospital. i.e. 4oz plain yogurt, 4oz apple juice, or 4 oz split pea soup, 4 oz grape juice, pudding snacks (low sugar) etc.
I did have a freezer pop and spent 30-60 mins w/diarreah (sp). Is that dumping syndrome?
From my paperwork it says I can do soft/pureed foods at 2+wks. Anyone try it sooner?
I did eat mashed potatoes today for dinner, and it was nice but I'm sure it's not good to eat fatty food.
My doc's/nut say I need fat to absorb vitamins, and I don't drink milk. Guess I should try soy milk?
Anyway, and help/advice would be greatly appreciated!
Kat

"I did have a freezer pop and spent 30-60 mins w/diarreah (sp). Is that dumping syndrome?"
As far as I know, freezer pops contain sugar alcohols. Therefore, those who have undergone gastric bypass surgery usually experience violent illness (as in dumping) when sugar alcohol is consumed. That's because sugar alcohol is not absorbed into the small intestine.
Here is a list of some common sugar alcohols to avoid:
Glycol
Glycerol
Erythritol
Arabitol
Xylitol
Mannitol
Sorbitol
Isomalt (Palatinat)
Maltitol
Lactitol
D-Tagatose
Polydextrose
HSH Hydrogenated Starch

It would be a good idea to try soy milk, as long as you're not allergic to soy. I was served soy milk while at the hospital, but I didn't like it that much.
Hope this helps!
