Hi- how's Vicki?
Hey! I am home now!!!
The usual timeline is 3-4 nites when done lap and one week when done open. I stayed in the hospital 5 nites. Got home around 12:30 this afternoon but was too tired to do anything so went to lie down.
Dr. D advised me that my surgery was very easy and there were no surprises. The surgery lasted 3.5 hours. In recovery for about 3 or 4 hours before going to my room just before 4:00 in the afternoon. Was sipping water within a few minutes of being settled in. Also started the clear liquid diet at the dinner meal. Started full liquids at the breakfast meal on post-op day 2 (Friday). The nurses considered me a champion of sipping water and other fluids. I walked the halls quite a bit too.
I was due to go home last Saturday but was kept in the hospital a couple of days longer because of a high output from the JP tube and Dr. D wanted to monitor it. The output went down significantly last nite. Vicki J pulled the JP tube out with Dr. D's blessing this morning. It didn't hurt.
I don't have a laptop computer and the hospital wouldn't let me use the computer in my room.
I am sipping water as I work and am doing great!

Hi Vicki,
I was thinking about you this weekend and looking to see if you had posted that you were home. Does the DS normally take about three hours to do? Did or do you have much pain? So glad you did okay and you're back home. Looking forward to hearing of your progress. I'm still going back and forth on the RNY and DS, but leaning more towards the DS.
Take care,
Linda
Thank you, Linda!
Does the DS normally take about three hours to do?
It depends on if it is done open or lap (mine was done lap). Plus, it also depends on what the surgeon finds when he looks inside. The OR I was in was scheduled for 4.5 hours.
Did or do you have much pain?
I had some pain initially, but those were resolved with the PCA and pain meds. The nurses always asked me if I was in pain when they took vitals and blood sugar tests or when they did nursing care.
I'm still going back and forth on the RNY and DS, but leaning more towards the DS.
I would encourage you to consider the DS. Plus, I encourage you to click on the following link to research the DS:

Dr. Deveney at OHSU is the only one in Oregon who performs the DS on a regular basis. There is another surgeon at the same clinic named Dr. Martindale who performs DS and other WLS on occasion.
