I know I'll probably have this answered when I do my pre-surgical class, but  I was wondering is any of you with sleep apnea were told you had to take the cpap with you to the hospital or if they just used one there for you.  I don't really want to have to take mine along.

Hi, my surgery was at OHSU and I was told to bring mine with me. I gave it to them when I checked in and they inspected it and set it up for me in my room-they made it easy. The reason you bring your own is because it already has the proper pressure setting and you are accustomed to your own mask.

When I went in for surgery, I forgot to bring mine, I used one from the hospital, (which sounded like a sherman tank****il my husband brought mine in, after I was discharged, they told me I did not need the CPAP anymore, which is a huge blessing/  I am 17 months out and down 276 lbs. Peggy

OHSU requires patients to bring their own CPAP and BiPAP machines whenever possible when patients are hospitalized or are going to be hospitalized.  That way, their machine settings are customized for each unique patient. If a patient is undergoing a sleep study and has such a machine, then the patient should take the machine with him/her to the sleep study so that the sleep techs can see the correct settings and make adjustments as necessary during the sleep study. I am certain that Legacy hospitals would make those kinds of requirements too. I went thru a sleep study recently and saw a CPAP machine right next to the bed I slept in.  The machine is not that big and can be carried around easily in its own carry case.  I will be having another sleep study tomorrow night because my previous sleep study failed.  Same place but not necessarily the same room.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea.  I never could get used to my CPAP machine so I gave it back.  Told them at the hospital that I have sleep apnea, but don't use the machine.  I had no problems, and surgery went just fine!

I hate the dang thing too.  That's really why I don't want to take it with.  Can not get used to it, but I didn't know you could just give it back. I see you are a Legacy patient too, did you have your surgery at Good Sam or SWMC?

I had my surgery at Good Sam.  I had a hard time returning the machine. I had to sign a release stating that it was against Dr. orders. The weird thing was the Dr. office called me and wanted me to come in just so they could give me a release.  I told them NO, I wasn't coming in, but I was returning the machine...which is what I did.

I was told to bring my own with me.  Being that I wasn't the most compliant user...I figured with all that was going on to me I didn't need or want it.  No one asked about it.  Sleeping is kind of a come and go thing anyways in the hospital -  with all the action and your post-op self, and I had an oxygen thing on too.  Luckily, as the weight came off my need for the C-PAP machine went away.  I don't like having something on my face, and I found it hard to see my book.  I know many people are so grateful to get decent sleep again that they love wearing it.  My family liked me wearing it because it stopped the snoring.  I always called it my C-CRAP machine.
