Right after I had GNY in  Feburary my oldest daughter was diagnosed with intercranial hypertension its been really rough for her, its been a hard year. last week the nerologist told us that although she had lost some weight and has been on high doses of dieretics she is not responding well and is loosing her sight. She will have to have a shunt sergicaly inplanted to bring her pressures in her head down, on sunday we were in the ER and they did yet another lumbar puncture to bring the pressure down. yesterday was a good day, today the perssure in her head is bad, vision is doubled and she feel twice, we called the nerologist and they said if things get worse they will have to do a emergency surgery, She is so upset,, she has managed to get a job in the last 6 month when the symptons had been reduced with medication, the last few months have been really hard at work and she has the worst most uncaring manager in the world, if she gets at all dizzy they send her home and tell her to not come back to work unless she can garentee that she is not dizzzy or will ever fall again. then when she calls work and tells them she is not well yet they write her up , they are just trying to fire her,, she is determined to go to work tomarrow no matter what. I am thinking that we need to see a attorney but I dont know ,, she needs to keep her job for the insurance. but they are making it so hard on her and really could give a crap what happens to her in the mean time.  Im so weary of all of this im so worried about her,, she is an adult so what i can do is limited.

Oh Kelly - I'm so sorry to hear that your daughter isn't doing well and it really sucks that she has a boss who is a jerk.  I don't know why some supervisors have to be like that.  Is she eligible for FMLA?  It seems they shouldn't be able to fire her if she has a medical condition that makes her miss wor****asionally. I wish you both the very best. Linda

Thanks Linda, I will be calling her HR person today to check what she is elegable for. I belive they have to give her 6 weeks of unpaid leave but I am not sure. I have always had bosses that let me do what I had to with no repurcisions, So I dont know how the FMLA actually works. I will do my research today and maybe call a lawyer.  I appreciate your thoughts :)  kel

Kelly, I'm so sorry to hear this-you must be so worried! I hope your daughter can get well soon. That's horrible about her job-definitely look into the FMLA so she can keep her insurance. Take care.

Kelly, I'm sorry to hear this is happening to your daughter!  I do hope that something can be done for her soon, and will keep her in my thoughts and prayers...and you too, because I can only imagine the stress you must be feeling!  I also hope that you can get some sort of resolution for her through her job.  Personally, it seems like there must be some sort of job protection for her, but I know we aren't all so lucky to have the kind of employers that you have had!  I wish!   My thoughts and prayers going upwards for you and your daughter, Gayla

I was diagnosed with idiopathic intercranial hypertension (also called pseudo tumor cerebri) when I was 15 after my optometrist checked my optic nerves and they were swollen and hemorrhaging (I had been having terrible headaches for two weeks and my PCP decided it was just allergies but my mother took me to get my eyes checked just to be sure). I was immediately sent up to the Casey Eye Institute up in Portland where visual field tests were done, then the next day I had a MRI to rule out brain tumors, and a spinal tap to determine the pressure and then put on 500mg of diamox. After several months I was taken off the Diamox and was fine-although I hadn't lost any weight (that's why they call it "idiopathic" because while they like to relate it to weight-it can simply come and go regardless). I was fine up until a few years ago when I started getting the same headaches that I got when it first occured so I'm back on Diamox. I've never met anyone with this rare disorder-if you or your daughter ever want to chat-let me know. I think your best bet is to find out about FMLA . If that's not an option, cobra is an option to keep her insurance. I would worry more about protecting my vision than my job.I really hope everything turns out well!  Well life gets too hard to stand...kneel. ~Melissa
