I had Dr. O'Rourke, yes I had my surgery choice in mind, RNY, and that's what I went with. I had very good interactions with the staff at the Bariatric Surgery offices as well as while in the hospital. My results have been good, the follow up and all care I received have been great. Michele

I had Robert O'Rourke do my surgery.  I would have loved to have had the DS, but my insurance wouldn't cover it.  I chose RNY and Dr. O'Rourke agreed it would be best for me.  He was great, the assistant surgeon, Dr. Kim, was great, the hospital left a bit to be desired.  Actually, they weren't too bad to me, but my poor roommate had issues and the nurses never came quickly enough for her.  I ended up having to call the nurses for her a lot after they left her in the bathroom!  I was able to get up and around myself, so I was fine. Oh - I forgot to say that I liked the staff at the Digestive Health Center and they were very responsive to any questions I had after surgery. Linda

I had Bruce Wolfe. He's the newest member of the team at OHSU, joining them from UC Davis.  I had a revision from a previous weight loss surgery from 1990 to a RNY.  Digestive Health Center was great.  The hospital is a good one.  But, it's a hospital - busy and noisy...and since it's a teaching hospital, it's crowded too.    Dr. Wolfe is very good.  He does revisions and RNY and Lapband surgeries there, and, a lot of research for bariatric surgery throughout the country.   OHSU has the best of the best surgeons.  You won't be disappointed with whoever you decide to go with. I am still pre-op for DS with Dr. Deveney.  He is the only one at OHSU who performs the DS.  I hope to have the surgery in February or March of 2008.  I understand that I will be staying in the hospital 2-3 nites if done lap or 7 nites if done open.  I have already had appointments with Susan, the NP, and Shannon, the dietician.  Both are excellent.  I am awaiting a sleep study in just 2 weeks at a nearby Marriott Residence Inn, where I will get to sleep in a real bed while the sleep techs monitor me from another room.  I get to eat the hotel's free breakfast in the morning and I heard from a couple of people that it's to die for. I had a hysterectomy at the main hospital of OHSU and stayed in the hospital 3 nites rather than the surgeon's usual 7 because I was recovering so well.  I was on the 14th floor of the main hospital in the Women's Health Center ward on the north side (the C-wing).  The door to my room was kept closed at all times for privacy reasons and to keep hospital sounds out.  All the IVs and catheter were removed the morning after my surgery.  I walked the halls a lot once I did the initial walk in the afternoon the day after my surgery.  The halls have railings on the walls to allow patients to hang on to them as needed.  The surgeon and her residents stopped by several times a day.  The day nurses were great.  I had different 2nd-shift nurses; one was very good and the other was not very responsive because she socialized with other patients too much and didn't seem to understand my needs when I had a problem with one of my staples.  The 3rd-shift nurses woke me up for vitals the first couple of nites but otherwise I slept a lot during their shift.  The staples were removed the day of my discharge and replaced with steri-strips which were removed about a week later. I had a day surgery at the day unit at the Multnomah Pavillion of OHSU and left the hospital 7 hours after being admitted.  I was in surgery 4 hours and in recovery about an hour longer than necessary because the spaces at the day unit were full.  One of the nurses told me that they usually move patients out of recovery once the patients wake up and are stable.  I had a combined gurney/bed that I could adjust with the touch of a few buttons and it was with me throughout my stay.  Overall, the staff was very professional. In all my stays, I was discharged in wider-width wheelchairs.

Hi, I had my RNY at OHSU with Dr Deveney. I had originally wanted the lapband but changed my mind once I did more research. My hospital stay was wonderful-I had a private room and was treated like a queen. The nurses were exceptionally attentive and I felt like I was at a spa. I must have lucked out and hit the hospital on the perfect week or something! Dr Deveney is very busy and I didn't have much contact with him. I mostly saw his fellow and nurses, but I always felt well-cared for there. I had to be proactive with my followups though-at my 3 month visit I had to ask for a blood draw because Dr Deveney thought I looked "fine" and didn't need any. But, it turned out I was very anemic, so I'm glad I pushed the issue!
