CPAP and surgery

There is an adapter for your CPAP that enables the oxygen tube to be hooked up. Everyone all along the way knew I had a CPAP but when I got to my room after surgery and it was time to go to sleep they left me with the oxygen tube in my nose. As sleep apnea sufferers will do I stopped breathing and the machine started peeping until I woke up and started breathing again. This went on for hours, with the nurses telling me to stop holding my breath, (uninformed nurses)  until I got fed up and said I had to have the CPAP.  I couldn't have both. Bad night with transfering breathing equipment back and forth. Afterwards I found from the CPAP store that there is an adapter and told my physician. He wasn't happy with my treatment at the hospital and has informed them. So this is for your information. If I have to spend the night again in hospital I will have my own oxygen adapter. Hopefully it won't be long before I can give up this machine at night. Kandy

Curious, where did you have your surgery?

Happiness is an attitude.  We either make ourselves miserable, or happy and strong.  The amount of work is the same.  ~Francesca Reigler

Rogue Medical Center. in Medford, OR  They have a special area for Bariatric. Very nice. My doc was surprised that they (or maybe it was just that nurse) didn't know about the oxygen adapter. Southern Oregon Bariatric Clinic. This clinic has been so thorough. They provide a community service of support groups for anyone with bariatric surgeries. Nutrition classes also. Kandy

Thanks for the heads-up.  Many CPAP users don't even get told to bring their CPAP with them to the hospital, either.  I asked and that's why I had mine... Lori
