Has anyone had Emma Patterson for BPD/DS? When I went to the seminar at Legacy, they briefly mentioned that they do this surgery, but not as routinely as RNY and Lapband. Beyond that, they did not cover the specifics of it at all except to put an illustration and short explanation of it in the folder they hand out. I'm wondering just how many BPD/DS she's done and what her outcomes have been. Any information about her or other docs who do this surgery would be much appreciated! Thanks! ~Melissa

Call Dr. Patterson's office and find out how many "switches" she has done. There is another surgeon in Portland who does them.  His name is Dr. Clifford Deveney of OHSU.  He has had many years' experience doing them and his name is listed as the only surgeon from Oregon recommended by www.duodenalswitch.com.  He prefers to do them lap but will do open as necessary. You are welcome to visit our Duodenal Switch message board and ask questions and participate in the forum.  Here is the link: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/

Dr Deveny di dmine...I reccomend him & staff. See bar to the left side of the page where it says "other OR resources" and Find a Bariatric Surgeon? Go there and you can view patients recommend too.

So I called the office and they said Patterson and Jan together have only done 18 BPD/DS compared to 1,000 gastric bypasses! I asked what the results were and she said one of them lost 250lbs in two years which she believed to be comparable to RNY. The way the BPS/DS was spoken about, they seemed to think it was some antiquated version of the RNY....hmm

That's the implication I got when I went to the seminar in 2005.  But, again, I went to the seminar knowing that I wanted to have lap band anyway so it didn't really matter to me. Lori

I was very interested in Dr. Patterson because of her great reputation, but then it seemed that she was waivering on if she would do the DS or not.  I opted to have mine at OHSU, rather than settle for RNY/LB which I knew I didn't want.  I had a lot of weight to lose, and I was always a lousy long term dieter, so the DS was for me.  IF it is what you want, do whatever it takes to get it, IT IS SO WORTH IT!!!

Isha - I lost 235 pounds EATING NORMAL!  Saavy? Click on my name to find out why I chose the Duodenal Switch Surgery instead.
