I'm in the research stages. I am a self pay and am checking out different locations/doctors in Oregon. I was wondering if anyone has had the RNY at OSHU and if so would you mind sharing how much it cost.  Hopefully, I will have the lap and only have to stay 1 day.

I had lap RNY at OHSU.  The bill was $30,373.  I had to stay the day of surgery, the next day, and got to go home on the third day.  My insurance paid much less than the $30,373.  Since I had already reached my maximum out of pocket, that was all they got.  I don't know if they give a discount if you self pay. I had hoped it would be less due to being a teaching university.  I've found RNY's in the from $12,000 to $52+.  I don't really understand the extreme difference in cost.  I was hoping to stay in Oregon since it is my home but I may have to go to another state.  Thanks

I had an RNY at OHSU, but it was open with another complication that was repaired.  I was a self-pay and believe me, no discount given.  I was initially told that the  RNY was $26,000 and that the hospital required that upfront prior to the surgery.  When we got there, they  wanted $17,000 up front, but so far my total bill is about $60,000.  We're still waiting for the final billing so we can pay it - took an equity line on the house.    OHSU is an excellent facility, however, and believe me I'm not complaining.  They saved my life. Good luck with your search. Donna

Have you looked at Bay Bariatrics In Coos Bay, Oregon.  Dr. Tersigni is a wonderful surgeon and the cash price is $24,300.  He has performed over 1,000 cases and the care at Bay Area Hospital is wonderful.  Best of luck to you, Robin

The correct acronym is OHSU, as in Oregon Health and Science University. Here is OHSU's policy about self-pays (taken from OHSU's website):

Self-Pay Options: If you do not have insurance, or your insurance will not cover bariatric surgery, you have the option to pay for the bariatric surgery services. Please call our Bariatric Scheduling Coordinator at (503) 494-1983 for price information. Our policy requires that all visits must be paid in full prior to the service, and that the surgery fee (including surgery, anesthesia and hospitalization) is required two weeks prior to the date of surgery.

No need to point out the wrong spelling I know you all new what I meant.  I've been to their website thanks.   I've called but have received no reply so I've left messages.  I'm sure I'll get a response before long.  Hey don't worry I won't be asking anymore questions. Thanks anyway.

OHSU's policy as stated by Vicki did not apply in my case, and in no way did they require payment in full prior to my surgery, and I knew and they knew my insurance would not cover anything.  So,  there is always an exception to the rule. Donna

Please don't be put off by Vicki.  She likes to correct peoples' mistakes, but I think she means well.  Feel free to ask away -- anything you want to know.  I have heard that Dr. Tersigni (I think that's how the name is spelled but, if not, Vicki will surely correct me ), at Bay Bariatrics does lap bands for $10,000 and I imagine the RNY is not too much more.  You might want to contact their office.  I have heard that they recently became a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery.
