Hi, I had the LapBand done in Eugene w/Dr Umbach and to correct Linda, Nancy also has Dr Umbach as her doc. I am at almost 3 months, I have not lost much since my surgery.  I had my 3rd fill 2 wks ago today  and now, finally, have some restriction!  I will probably go in & get weighed to see where I am. I keep having episodes of being stuck, sliming, & pain.  It takes a while to figure out a routine that  works, know the types of foods you can tolorate or not, & most important.....change bad habits!

I had my surgery a little over two weeks ago with Dr. Umbach.  I haven't had any fills yet, but I have been eating what I'm supposed to and losing weight...  and I feel great.  I have had very few problems.

Thanks to those of you who have answered me.  I have a friend who is interested and I couldn't give any advise because I had an RNY not a lap band.   Has Dr Umbach done very many lap bands?  on this site it only looks like he has only done a couple of them.   Is is normal to not lose right away?  How do you know if you have enough or too much restriction?   thanks Darla

I can't answer your questions about Dr. Umbach but I can answer your last 2 questions. Is is normal to not lose right away? It is not normal to lose right away, but a lot of people do. Most doctors say that if you lose any weight during the 1st month it's a bonus. Granted, your intake is much less but the main focus is healing from surgery. FYI - I lost 17 pounds the 1st month. How do you know if you have enough or too much restriction? My rules of thumb regarding proper restriction are 1) if I can eat only 1/2 c. to 1 c. of food and 2) if I stay full for at least 4-5 hours. If I have too much restriction, then I am unable to keep anything down, including liquids. I have been too restricted twice and both times had a slight unfill of .2 cc's in my band. It's amazing to think that even that tiny amount can make a difference but, believe me, it does! Please let your friend know that he/she has any more questions, I can be contacted through my website www.triciakutz.com. There are progression pics there as well.

Bariatric surgery has a steep learning curve so I believe that you should choose a surgeon that has performed at least 500  cases with proven statistic.  Dr. Umbaugh just started performing the lap band surgery and has only done a few cases.   Weight loss  post band can be very significant if your surgeon places you on a high protein liquid diet for 4 weeks.  Our Lap Band patients at Bay Bariatrics are doing extreamley well with there over all weight loss. Choose a program with a great educational  component that also provides excellent follow up care. Best of luck to you, Stay focused, Robin
