Voice Hoarseness/Whispering

Hi all! I had my surgery last Friday and everything has went pretty well. I do have a question about my voice. It is sort of hoarse and I sound like I am almost whispering when I talk. It doesn't seem to have gotten better since I have been home. Is this normal? I thought maybe it was from the tube they put down my throat while I was in surgery, but I just don't know. Plus, no on told me about it as a side effect.  Have any of you experienced the same thing? I just don't want it to be a lung issue. If it will work out over time I wouldn't be too concerned....

I was hoarse for about a week or so after surgery.  The more I talked the worse it got it seemed.  I do not know of any other reason for this besides the tube down your throat but don't hesitate to call the dr. if you feel like it may be something different.  That is what they are there for.  If you had your surgery down in eugene kathy is a great resource so ask questions.  Better safe than sorry.  I hope it gets better soon.  Tara

Have you asked Dr. Jan about this?  It isn't unheard of to have a vocal cord irritation but you should probably still have someone in his office look into it for you. Lori

Kristal - it is most likely from the breathing tube, but it never hurts to ask.  When I had my hysterectomy (full abdominal incision), I woke up with a horrible cough from the breathing tube! Nothing like all those stitches and having to cough all the time.  Call your doc, just to be sure! Linda

Thanks everyone. I called Dr. Jan's office today and they said it was from the breathing tube an would last for about a week. I wan't too worried, just wondered why I'd never heard of it...and I did a LOT of research of all the issues that could come up with WLS. : )
