Darla P Back at Sacred Heart Today
I just talked with Darla and she sounds GREAT!! Turned out she had a hole in her bowel and it was very large and inflamed. It sounds like this is fairly common several months to years postop and can happen up to 10 years postop. It can be pretty serious but is very easily fixed. She was in and out of the OR in 15 minutes!!! She is hoping to go home tomorrow but does not know yet. I am so happy to post the good news. I was quite worried about her as I ran into her at the dr. office yesterday afternoon when she was going in to get checked out. I am so relieved she is going to be just fine!!
Hi Lisa & Everyone,
Lisa, I appreciate that you posted this for me as I asked. You are a sweetheart.
You really know who your friends are when you go through something like this. I cannot thank you all enough for your kind wishes and concern. I certainly feel the FRIEND LOVE here. You all are so good to me. Some that didn't post on here came to see me and that really helps us pull through in times like this. Thank you so much everyone!
I spoke with Dr. Umbach today and to both Dr's Umback and Gorrin yesterday. What a great team of doctors we have there but I don't need to sell that idea to anyone that knows them personally I'm sure. The report in today is that my prognonis is excellent. Dr. Umbach explained to me that the "crater" in my intestine was contained within the intestinal tube so no chance for any kind of a leak. The problem is that something seperated in there and created a hole and food was getting caught in there and causing massive inflamation resulting in the terrible pain I was experiencing. When I called the OBC, I was told to come right in. They didn't mess around. Both doctors examined me, had a meeting of the minds and sent me across the street for admission to the hospital. My simptoms began to subside in the evening and Doctor Umbach ran an idea past me (love that I got to help in the decision making of this matter) he suggested a good nights sleep and a CAT scan so we could have some results by morning and possibly may be able to avoid a surgery. Well, needless to say, I was all over that one. Next morning, yesterday, about 7 AM a nurse entered my room and said Dr. Umbach contacted them and asked them to get me ready for surgery. CAT scan was positive for a blockage and surgery was the only solution. I was in surgery by 8 AM and all went very well. I got to come home today. This surgery was much easier and I'll probably only be off work for 1-2 weeks would be my best guess. I go back to get staples out on 6/1/07 and should find out then. They did this all lap surgery and went through 2 existing holes while creating 2 additional new ones. Bottom line, I feel so much better just sore at incision site is all.
This can happen even 60 years later...they never know when or who. It just happens but is very fixable. Listen to your body and don't ignore the signs and all will be just fine.

My friend Rebeka A. just went through this last week. She had surgery a couple weeks before me, March 2006, and then suddenly last week she had an intestinal blockage, and they had to take her into surgery to fix it. In her case, Dr. Suh (we both had the same surgeon) said her "pouch" had FLIPPED and her intestines were twisted around/behind it! Strange, and scary when we are 14 months out and thinking we've had no complications, feeling so safe this far out...
I guess there is always a chance of this happening whenever you have surgery involving your intestines, like we have...
