Hi, it's been awhile since I have posted. As my title emplies I have been diagnosed with breast cancer as of yesterday. It's been one week since I had the biopsy and I was hoping that I was in the 80% no cancer category, instead I am in the 20% with cancer catagory. Needless to say I was blind sided. I have done alot of crying because now that I have to have more sugery and then six weeks of radiation therapy I will have to put off my meeting with Dr. Patterson and push back my sugery date until I am done with the treatment. I have a question. Has anyone had this, and then later were you able to have the wls. I feel down about all of this.

Sheryl, I am so sorry to hear this. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. I do not have any experience (thankfully) so I can not answer your question however I wouldnt think that one would have any effect on the other but thats just my opinion. I have seen many people survive this and if you are strong and positive you WILL too!!! I can not imagine what you are going just know that people are praying for you! Tara

Aw Sheryl. I'm so sorry to hear you have this challenge in your life. I wish you the best in terms of treatment and recovery. I have not had cancer, but I have had several lumps that have had to be removed. I recall that waiting for the biopsy results was horrible, but at least I always had a good report. I can't think of why this would keep you from being able to have WLS. Actually, they believe that obesity is one of the causes of breast cancer, so I would think that they would be supportive of your losing weight after your treatment. In the meanwhile, we are here for you. Please let us know how you are doing. Linda

Sheryl, I'm so sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with the breast cancer, but you will come through this and of course a winning attitude makes all the difference. Yes, I remember several throughout the country who have had their WLS AFTER they had breast cancer. I also know of several who had breast cancer after WLS, but I can't for the life of me remember exactly who. I suggest you post to the main board about this as well....there may be someone there who knows...also post to the grad board about this as they are all at least a year out and sometimes more. Finally when all else fails send a note to Amy Williams or Tooter. Tooter is on a bit of a sabatical right now, but does have internet access and I received a message from her yesterday. Both of them are on staff at OH and have been around here awhile. Hang in there Sheryl. You will be in my prayers. Trisha

Sheryl, It's very seldom that I am at a loss for words, but right now is one. I am sorry that you have to go through this. (((Hugs))) to you Sheryl. My prayer for you is that you will recover quickly, find a good support group to attend for the Breast Cancer, and that you will be able to stay in touch with this group so we can support you also. Sheryl, I'm sorry to hear of your news but there is so much hope out there. I remember the day when there was none. Today, that is just not so. Obviously you must take care of this first; I have a disease and what others are telling you is true. A positive frame of mind and not letting it get the best of you makes all the difference. I should have been back in a wheel chair 17 years ago and I'm not even close today. I refuse to let this beat me! You have great medical care in the Portland area, some of the best in the country and I have no doubt that WLS, after you are better from the cancer, is a definite. Things happen for a reason and although that's not fun to hear, there is usually a lesson to be learned with every hurdle we face in life. Embrace it. You will be a stronger person for it. The power of prayer is the greatest power we have on this earth today, I will pray that God heals you and makes you stronger. You have so much to look forward to! Here's to you and the power of prayer and positive thinking! Darla

Hi Sheryl, I sat next you at the McMinnville support group. I'm so sorry to hear about your news, but you are young and can come back from this stonger than ever. I hope I'll see you at the June meeting so we can get an update. Take care, Eve

Sheryl, I'm so sorry to hear about your cancer diagnoses. We met at the McMinnville support group when I came up from Coos Bay to speak. You are a friendly, lovely woman and you must remain positive. You have so much life and love in your heart. Several of our gastric bypass patients are breast cancer survivors. Just take one day at a time and continue your dreams. I will continue to keep you in my prayers. Love you girl, Robin
