Hi, I have finished jumping through the hoops except for the sleep study that I will have at Salem Hospital this Friday. I am considering the Lap Band. I am just curious as to what has made some of you chose the RNY over the Lap Band. I want to make sure that I am chosing the right surgery. Sheryl E.

Sheryl - I chose RNY because I think I will need the malabsorptive property of that surgery in addition to the restriction of the amount eaten. I've also hear of some nasty complication with the lap band (slippage, excess tissue growth around the band, etc) that sort of put me off that procedure. HOWEVER - each procedure has it's own set of benefits and possible complications so, in the end, you just have to decide what is best for you. Best wishes for a successful outcome. Linda

Hi Sheryl, I choose the Laproscopic RNY because I felt I needed the surgery to provide me with more control over portion than my own self-control, which was weak. I hope that makes sense. My surgeon also felt that because my BMI was over 50, that the RNY was a better choice for me. I also read a lot of posts of those with the Lap Band getting revisions to RNY or DS. Had my insurance covered DS, I probably would have chosen that surgery because of the additional malapsorption. I wanted the most help surgery could provide and that would be covered by my insurance. Hope this helps. Good luck on your surgery. Jill

I saw Dr. Jan. I knew I only wanted lap band and he said he prefers to do the band on larger patients because its safer for him and for us. Really, for me, it was a risk factor. I couldn't accept the risks associated with the more aggressive surgeries and their possible complications. I have been banded for 18 months and have no regrets -- even though I've been quite a slow loser. If I had to do it over again, I would... Lori

HI Sheryl, I love my lap band, the suregery was 45 minutes I waled out the same day and returned to work 4 day later. Im 2 1/2 years out and have started a support group In McMinnville, we meet the 28th of April and would love to have you come join us and meet others who have choosen the band. Its such a personal choice both surgeries will bring you closer to healther life. I went from a size 20/22 to single digit size 8. I would have never thought that to be possible. I love my band because I can have it adjusted thought out my life time and that give me security. I have some photos on my profile feel free to check them out and I would happy to answer any questions you might have just email me. Good luck Gail
