Surgery in Mexico
I am looking for some information on this option. Has anyone here had there surgery performed in Mexico by Dr Ortiz and his staff? How was the experience? How were the facilities? Did you have it done in Cancun or Tijuana? How hard is it to find follow up care when you return to the NW? Dr Ortiz seems like he is extremely qualified, my concern is cleanliness in Mexico? I have vacationed in both cities and neither of them were very clean. Especially TJ...
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I grew up in San Diego and as an RN I personally would not have surgery in Mexico. I work for a Dr. Tersigni at Bay Bariatrics in Coos Bay, Oregon. Eight of my family members have had Lap Band or bypass surgery here. Our fee for Lap Band surgery is $10,000. It is performed in day surgery and is done as an out patient. The fee includes your follow up for the first year and three fills. We fill patients that have gone to Mexico for their bands. Many of the Mexico lap band patients are not doing well because they did not receive the proper education before surgery. We have also removed the band from two patients that went to Mexico because the band had eroded into the stomach. We also have had patients from Mexico were we were unable to access their port because it had flipped and we had to go back in and reposition the port and suture it to the muscle wall. Please consider carefully where you choose to have surgery. The surgery is just the initial step in your journey to a new you. The follow up care and education are critical.

Read my profile and you'll see my experience with Dr. Aguirre in Ensenada. You will see a lot that might change your mind about Mexico. If you are thinking of an RNY, I highly recommend Dr. Aguirre. He has an incredible record and has been doing this since the late 80's.
As for lap band, if you are looking into that, by the time you pay travel costs and try to find someone to do fills locally, you are MUCH better off going to Dr. Tersigni. That $10,000 deal is unbeatable....even if you went to Mexico.
