My surgery date is Feb 26th and my doctor requires a 2 week pre-op liquid diet. Yup, I didn't misunderstand 2 WEEK liquid diet. I am on day six and I'm hungry and feel slightly dingey all the time. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm desperate :'(

Kathleen, Eat the stuff from the post op Full Liquid stage your nutritionist gave you... sf puddings, sf jello, smoothies, soup, etc... And remember, after surgery it is WAY easier to stick to the liquid diet :P so don't despair. Make sure you add protein powder to a few of the meals to make yourself a little fuller. And ask your nutritionist if you can sneak some salad in, as it's mostly liquid, just use a low fat low cal dressing :P Good luck, keeping my fingers crossed for you, Michele

Why does he require such a long liquid fast? I would be going crazy too! I don't think it sounds very good to be doing something that makes you feel bad and not your strongest right before surgery. I am sure you have done your research and chosen your surgeon based on a confidence that he is the right doctor for you. While it is important to follow your doctors orders carefully, it is not necessary to do that without asking for advice and clarification from him on why this is required. There is a doctor in Vancouver that requires a skim milk diet for a month. I think that is crazy and I wouldn't be able to comply with that one. Hang in there and do your best. I sympathize! Patty

WOW, I am in the Eugene area, only about 60 miles from Salem and our surgeons here only require that we lose the recommended weight (in my case, it was 5 lbs) and to make certain I don't eat anything high fat for a couple of days prior to surgery. I am a little more than 3 weeks post op and doing well. If it gets too tough, maybe you should consider coming to Eugene to the Oregon Bariatric Center. These docs are amazing and get you back to a more "normal" life faster then most I have read about. Don't wish to discourage you, but if the guidelines are too strict, 60 miles is not all that far away...just a thought. Darla

The 2 - 4 week skim milk/ liquid diet is to get your liver as fat free as possible so it can easily be moved around. They prefer to make things as safe as possible and to lessen the risks of anything happening during surgery. You are halfway through the liquid diet and on towards your surgery! You can do this. It is just one more struggle you must go through. You are strong! Follow what they say. From here it gets easier! You need positive enrgy and faith that you can do it not people saying it is ridiculous! If you are told to do it there is a reason. It is in your best interest.
