People who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, specifically Roux-en-Y (RGB), should be careful not to eat too much sugar alcohols as doing so can lead to "dumping" and intense internal body odor. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_alcohol" (I ate so called "sugar free" candy just prior to bed time 2 nights ago - 3 pieces for a total of 50 calories. This will be TMI I'm sure but I woke up in the night very, very gassey just like I was a few days after surgery. When I got up and started moving around in the morning, my heart began to race, I got VERY sweaty and had to keep going outside in the cool morning air to try to help relieve the nausea which then led to me throwing up The severe experience lasted about an hour. Now I know more about sugar alcohols and why we might want to avoid them) Darla

Thanks for the info Darla. It sounds like a horrible experience. It's so nice to have you all go through this stuff before me, so I can know what to expect. Hope you are feeling better now. Linda

Thanks Jackie. I can look at this as a blessing in disguise though. It will keep my hand out of the cookie jar so-to-speak Darla

Hey Nan!! Yes, you sure did tell me but I had already eaten it by then. I honestly thought dumping happened only shortly afterwards. This wasn't until the next morning......live and learn. Guess sweets are just not in store for me......even if "sugar free" Dar

I am so sorry you dumped, Darla. I've been lucky so far. Everyone is different on what bothers them and some don't dump on anything. So far, I've been lucky enough to dump on nothing (I have had other issues instead, lol). I can tolerate sugar alcohols without issue .... my SF candy is crystal light hard candy and it has 13 g of Isomalt per 4 pieces but usually I only eat one or two per day. I've also tried Baskin Robbins SF mint chip candy too and it has 15 g sugar alcohol per 4 pieces. What did you eat and how much sugar alcohol was in it? Hope you are feeling better now.

Hi Kim, I ate 2 butter rum for about 6 sugar alcohols and a Dove raspberry chocolate that had I think 9 sugar alcohols...going off memory here......I got rid of it, completely out of my sight so forgive me if I'm wrong.....I think I'm very close though. Yeah, just because I dumped on it does not mean others will. I may have been able to handle 1 pc. but now I'm afraid to try even that much. Darla
