Cerebral psuedo tumor

My now 13 year old daughter was diagnosed with psuedo tumor last spring. For her it was provoked by starting the drug Minocycline. For six weeks she had very alarming neurological symptoms that are the same ones that come up in brain tumors. That is why they call it psuedo tumor. It is actually intercranial hypertension. They were able to finally diagnose it because she had swollen retinas. After two spinal taps and going on the drug Diamox her retinas are back to normal and symptoms have been mostly gone. Though we went off the drug immediately, her doctor said it could take up to a year for the process that the Minocycline provoked to stop. Physical activity sometimes makes her head hurt, but it seems to be less and less. When one researches psuedo tumor they will find that it is most commonly found in obese females of fertile age, and the cause in those cases is idiopathic (without known provocation). The first recommendation is weight loss. My daughter is not obese and hadn't started her periods. Her doctor has never said she needed to lose weight and has no doubt it was the Minocycline. Still, she DOES have a pubescent pudge that I would not have been alarmed about if this hadn't happened. Add my history of obesity and I basically am freaked out about it. Eye damage happens when it is not diagnosed and uncontrolled. With a diagnosis they will be watching that closely. With good care it can be managed - she will be O.K. The best site I have found is www.ihrfoundation.org/about-us/default.asp. Patty
