Silly questions

Good morning. I guess it is time I start posting more. I finally have an appointment with the Nurse prac & the nutritionist at OHSU on Feb. 9th. I am excited about getting this going. I have some questions, and they are kind of silly in the grander scheme of things, but I have done so much research I find it funny that I don't know the answer to these easy questions. 1. So, I need to lose 5% before surgery (because of insurance), should I start losing that now or wait until I meet with the nurse to get a starting point? (I had a Dr's appointment back in August and they weighed me then, can I use that as my starting weight?) 2. So, when you talk about losing inches, what are the main areas I should measure and follow? If I measure every 2 inches on my body and keep track, I'll lose about 4000 inches. I am thinking neck, chest, stomach, waist, bicep, thigh, & calf. Too many? Other places? 3. I have my appointment with the nurse and nutritionist. Do you think they would let me set up my psych eval on the same day since I am from Eugene and I don't want to drive to Portland that often? Thanks!! Bil

Hello and welcome. I to am going through OHSU and I meet with the Nurse prac on dec 5 but before that I did my psych eval before that so they had all my info when I went in for my appt all that was left to do was wait til the first for my new insurance to kick in (long story) I didn't have any problems getting in to see someone to for my psych eval I used Michelle (can't remember her last name) You should call Tara the scheduler for her phone number. GL hope this helps P.S. be ready it was a 3 hour appt! p.p.s You should come to the suport group also it is every 3rd tuesday of the month. I have been and everyone was very nice and I got a lot of info from them. I enjoyed seeing people who had been there done that! Rebecca

Bil, I would recommend you visit your doctor, have an official weigh in and use that as your starting point for insurance. Sometimes the process moves fast... the more stuff you have done the better. Regarding inches, the normal is exactly what you listed. Good thinking! lol I would call and try to get the psych appointment the same day... I would do as the person above me suggested and call their scheduler... they can work miracles for people coming long distance (I live on the coast and they did for me). And they are going to recommend that you lose 10% of your body weight at the surgeon's office, just an FYI. Good luck and hope all goes well. Michele

Thanks for bringing up these questions. I'm off to the info sesson at OHSU tomorrow, and I can ask some of these things there (at least, I hope they have time for questions). I've done two sessions here in Eugene, but they don't take my insurance, so I need to go to Portland. I'd like to get things done together as much as possible because of the drive too. Linda

Hey. there is no question that is stupid. Maybe strange but never stupid. Is this your first visit with the doctors or second. If it is your first just wait until you see the doctor to weight. They will weight you then and it is the percentage from then. But you know once we get started on losing it makes it easier the more we do. If you really want to get in the new habbits. You do have to lose that weight anyway so what is the difference if it before you see the doctor or after. You still have to lose it. Good luck with your visit. LoriM
