10 days post surgery
Well I just had my RNY surgery at Salem Hospital on Aug 28. Yesterday I went back for my first postop visit with Dr. Nair. Everything is going so great, I have a hard time believing it. I actually have more energy than before the surgery. Well at least in small bursts! I just wanted to let people know what my experience with the Salem Bariatric Surgery Center and Dr. Nair was. I have no complaints whatsoever. They were all wonderful to work with before my surgery and always available for questions. Dr. Nair is a great surgeon. After meeting him and talking to other area doctors, I had no problem having him do the surgery. Just as an FYI, they have only been doing surgeries here in Salem since about April. They have a great support group as well.
Since the program is relatively new, everyone seems to be bending over backwards to make sure everything is done at the highest order. One thing I noticed was the high amount of Salem Hospital employees as patients! From what I understand it is due to the internal knowledge of Dr. Nair's reputation. Quite a few nurses have gone through and many others are planning to. That seems to be a testiment to high quality as well. During my hospital stay, my nurses were all very aware of the program and again went out of their way to make me comfortable.
Now that I am home, I too am already tired of the full liquid diet. I feel that I am doing fairly well with getting my required liquids and proteins at this point. But the food is boring! I did make a big mistake the other night and confessed to my dietician at my checkup. I went to Safeway for some of their soup and bought Black bean with sausage. Okay, I knew at the time that it was not a good choice, but I could not help myself. I blended it up really good and added some chicken broth to make it less thick. But soon after eating it, I had a nasty queasy feeling. While I did not get sick, I knew that it was from the relatively high amount of fat in the soup that make me feel so bad. But I actually was glad that I had tried it, as I know understand some of the feelings that will come with food you are not ready for and may never be ready for. It certainly took any craving away for a fatty food.
Anyway, I did not mean to blab on so much, but I felt I should add something to the group as I have taken so much from all of you who post frequently. Hopefully I will continue to post on upcoming successes.

Hi Fran:
I had surgery on August 22nd, I had a check-up with the surgeon today, at 1st I had gained 6 lbs, the dr said it was water weight gain from being in the hospital. I lost 31lbs the first 2 1/2 weeks. I too go awfully sick and tired of the liquid diet they put me on for the first 2 weeks, then they started me on soft foods. I do okay, but get heartburn awful easy. over the past year and a half, I have lost 187 lbs all together.I ate one chicken Mcnugget the other night and was sicker than a dog. Never again!
Good luck on your journey,
Peggy
