I had my RNY on August 1. I came home on the 4th. I was so excited to have this done! I have felt nauseaus since I got home and the pain is pretty bad too. LOL! I remember thinking...walk walk walk......sip sip sip......The sipping makes me nauseus and there is no way I can walk anywhere. I know I have only been home for 2 days but I'm SO disapointed. I didn't realize I would just feel like crap..... Thanks for listening

Dear Longing, I am so sorry that you are having some "issues". Please remember that many, many of us had "buyer's remorse" after surgery. I was in constant tears, wanting my old stomach back! My doctor thought I was a basket case and my husband didn't know what to do with me. I was depressed and considering having my surgery reversed! I promise you that it will get better. I'm also so glad that you are posting here. It's the only thing that got me through the tough times. I am now one year out and loving life. I would do it again, in a second. Keep posting and, if things don't get better, talk to your doctor. We can support you here, but the medical aspect must be handled by your doctor. Take care and have faith! It will get better and better! Joy

I too am so sorry you are feeling so bad! I promise you it will get better. The first week after any surgery can be rough. Even though I was a vetran to abdominal surgery when I had my RNY (3 C-sections and a huge gallbadder incision), I was doing lamaze breathing every time I attempted to shift positions in bed, or get up out of a chair. Other people have said they didn't even need pain medication, but I needed plenty through the first week. When I had my first surgery (a C-section with a baby wanting to be fed to boot) I had no idea it would be so hard and I thought I was gonna die!! Lord help me if I sneezed or laughed! Luckily, the body will heal itself and recover from the insult. Your body has been under anesthesia which requires time to works it's way out from under. It can be the cause of nausea and fatigue. When I got home I was so pumped full of fluids I had gained 23 pounds in three days! (I know I wasn't supposed to look!) In no time you are going to be moving easier and find yourself able to do more. Don't be too hard on yourself if you get tired and find you need a nap. My doctor advised me that I would recover faster if I medicated my pain appropriately, so don't think you're a wuss to use it. The walking will get your insides doing what they need to do, so it is important to keep moving. That said though, just walking out onto the porch, or around the downstairs of my house is all I did that first week. Once you get some days behind you and start feeling better (you will) these early days will fade. The benefits will thrill you and it will have been so worth it. Keep in touch and let us know how you are doing. Patty

Thank you so much Joy and Patty! I mean thank you for listening. I guess I didn't think it would be this hard. What can I take to dull the nausea? I have not been taking the liquid pain medication. The first time I took it after I got home, the nausea set it.......now I'm scared to take it.

Talk to your surgeon about meds for nasuea. They've got some really good stuff on the market. You just may not like the delivery (my sister had to take suppositories when she was pregnant 'cause the pill just wouldn't stay down long enough to work). You need to ask your surgeon about the naseau and alternative pain meds. There are a lot of choices out there and not everyone can tolerate the type they are initially given. Good luck! Lori

Thanks Lori, I did call this morning. They said the nausea is fairly commofor the fist couple weeks. They said the only think they cold recommend was to crush Dramamine. I know how bitter and nasty it is.......at this point I was to gag just thinking of it..... I supposed this can only et better....

We just talked to my son's surgeon because he's getting his tonsils out next week. He gave us a drug that is a suppository to help with nausea along with the pain prescription. Of course being that my son is sixteen he was predicatably horrified and SURE he wouldn't be using that, but the surgeon advised that it would be a really good idea to have it to turn to. I also was given the same stuff (delivered the same way) in case the pain medicine made me nauseous after my hysterectomy. I suppose the nausea could be caused by the new pouch not being "stable" yet, or reaction to the pain medicine - I don't know if one is treatable more than another? Hopefully it will pass soon, and don't hesitate to call the doctor back and ask for more help. I called lots that first week. Good luck. Patty

Longing, I know how much it hurts, I was there too. My surgery was the 21st of July and when I got home I felt horrible. Then I fell off my deck and added insult to injury. However, by now things should be smoothing out a little for you and you're on your way to losing. Since surgery, when I weighed myself on Sunday, I have lost 12 additional pounds to the eight I lost before surgery. That's 20 lbs I hope never to see again. Just hang in there, it gets better. Keep going to the website. The best encouraginng words can be found here. There are so many who have been where we are and have found great success and are willing to share their triumphs and their plateaus. I would do it all again. Best wishes, Nancy

I too felt the same way. The message boards really helped me understand that what I was experiencing was pretty normal. My biggest fear was that I would not fit my work clothes after one week. (they would be too small). I felt like I was 9 months PG. The Gas in the tummy was the worst for me. But when it came time to go to work, I did wear the clothes, although it took anout 3 weeks for the gas to be gone. My surgery was on July 14th. I am in my 4th week. Hur-ray!!! I now can eat mushie foods. It gets better. The weight also comes off slowely of which I had to reminded that it comes off twice as slow as the other surgery. But that is OK, I am feeling better each day. My port site still hurts a little and I can really take note when I eat too much. My Stoma lets me know. Anyway, hang in there, it just like any other surgery, it all takes time. Pam from Newport
