Hubbys date looms - foods?
Hi All-
My husbands surgery is coming up really soon (7-27-06), and I don't have anything for him to eat post op yet. We are going out of state for surgery, so won't have our meeting with the dietician until a couple of days before surgery. What basics should I have on hand for right after he gets out of the hospital? I will be near a grocery store, so could get things if I need to. Any help would be appreciated. Every one I've talked to in person has different ideas of the necessities....
Also not just food, but any personal items that he will really want (but may not realize it now) with him to make it easier on him?
Thanks everyone who can help us out!
Kim
Hi Kim, my date is the 21st so I have been busy shopping for the post-op foods. Here's what I have done: Whey protein powder, tums (for calcium), my diabetic vitamin pak, keep on hand skim milk, some baby food (like peaches). Clear broth in a can or the boullion cubes, I hear knorr is the best. You also want to keep on hand some splenda. I also bought a mortar and pestle so I could pulverize the vitamins and supplements and whip them up with my protein drinks. Some people like the flavored waters. Also, if you don't have one, consider a hand-held shower to keep clean. Good luck and I hope this helps. Nancy
Hi Kim!
I thought of one other thing that your husband would probably find useful ... a small pillow to hold over his stomach if he needs to sneeze or cough. I have allergies and everytime I would sneeze, it would feel like my incisions were exploding! I just used a small pillow off my sofa to hold really hard against my stomach when I sneezed and that really helped.
As far as foods, right after surgery I sipped a lot of tomato soup (made with milk when cooking) or cream of mushroom soup. And Yoplait Light Lemon flavored yogurt was my favorite!
Hope that helps! Good luck to you both!
Deanna
