Do we absorb Coral Calcium

Hi, I'm 8 weeks out from my RNY with a ring, done in Brazil. I'm down a little over 45 pounds. I feel pretty well, but I get very tired. I'm trying to work out my supplements. Do we ablsorb Coral Calcium? I've found a liquid that doesn't taste bad, but realize I may not be absorbing it. Any info will be appreciated! Betsy

Hiya! Calcium types are listed - sadly they (companies) try and 'sneak' carbonate in by listing it as coral calcium. Sigh....anyway just an FYI: *Calcium gluconate is only 9.3% calcium *Calcium Citrate is 21% and is chelated for better absorption. (1000 mgs. = 105 elemental absorbed) - This is great for RNY folk and what my whole family takes. *Calcium Carbonate (also known as Coral Calcium) is 40% but because the molecules are so huge only about 2 to 4% of it is usable by the body AND requires stomach acids to be absorbed. (so for every 1000 mgs of calcium you only absorb around 40 mgs and that's for NORMAL stomachs). *Calcium Lactate is 14% calcium/ only 10% being absorbed by the body. (of 1000 mgs. only 122.1 is absorbed IF you have full acid production in the stomach for full absorption - this is rare in most normal adults and even more so for RNY patients) I know the first thing people always say is we need calcium citrate...but there is another form of calcium that we can take with good (if not better) results than just plain old citrate. A calcium citrate-malate combo is par excellence! Calcium is best absorbed in an acid environment and what calcium malate is, or ANY mineral-malate, is basically a mineral that's bound to malic acid and chelated. Since we (referring to RNYer's) don't have an acidic stomach for the calcium to dissolve in, this is ideal for us! Anyway, just an FYI Good luck!
