Topic: RE: I dumped on a banana smoothie today

I have yet to eat a whole banana. The most I've had is 1/2.

Yeah, that smoothie had a minimum of 24 grams of sugar. That's probably the issue.

I went through in Guelph last year and they have a psychiatrist there that you will have to see if you have a history of mental illness. I do, and was denied the surgery last year (for valid reasons). I can try again this year after I've made some progress. I would just be very open with them. I can see now that I wasn't ready last year and will be this time.

Topic: Did you know they have a quota to fill for RNY?

When I had my one year check up, I asked the dietitian if the number of RNYs were going up, down, or status quo. She said it was about the same because the program actually had a quota/ goal of RNYs that they had to meet/hit each year for each center of excellence. I was really conflicted about hearing this. Unfortunately I didn't probe further... but I was thinking... so are you just pumping out RNYs like a puppy mill? On the other hand, I thought it's a good chance for people to make it through the process. What are your thoughts on this? It was at Humber River Regional Hospital.

Topic: I dumped on a banana smoothie today

So for breakfast today, I was going to be healthy because I wanted the bananas, yogurt, and spinach.

Ingredients:

-one full banana

-5 leaves of fresh spinach

-vanilla Activia Yogurt

This was very filling. It took a long time to finish, but it was very tasty. About 5 minutes after I ate, I felt cramps and I immediately took that big dump poop. I could hear the water dumping from my intestines into my bowel. My mouth was producing a lot of saliva, too. So, yeah. There was probably a lot of sugar in my smoothie. Who else has dumped on fruit? Which fruit? So weird- dumping on a healthy food.

I used a timer on my phone to remind me to sip. If you have a fitbit or something similar, you can set silent alarms where your watch vibrates.

No one on the team spoke to any of my doctors.

As part of the "assessment", you will see, depending on the centre you are going through, some form of therapist/Social Worker.

In Hamilton, I saw a Social Worker/Therapist. She was very good and I really liked her. I had experienced some mental health challenges previous to starting this process. I was honest, told her what I had struggled with, and how I dealt with all of it.

Unless there is something really concerning to them, I don't think they would contact your Psychiatrist.

BTW, there are lots of Doctors who are not on board with this surgery. In fact, the Respirologist/Sleep Specialist I saw was an absolute Jerk about the whole thing and threatened to kibosh my efforts to have this surgery. I unloaded him and moved on.

Unless someone has a different experience, I think you'll be fine.

Hello, I'm wondering if the bariatric program provides a psychiatrist or therapist for you to talk to?

I'm hoping to avoid my psychiatrist speaking to the team because she has stated to me that she thinks the surgery is a bad idea and she has the mindset that I should just "put down the fork" in order to lose weight. I'm worried she will ruin my chance at the surgery because of her own bias.

Does anyone know who they'll likely speak to or have me speak to? What was your experience?

Sounds like you are doing fine. Just keep getting your fluids in and make sure you work on your protein shakes. Protein helps you heal so it's really important.

I'd work on the shakes before the soup and pudding. Don't forget you need 60 grams of protein each and every day.

Topic: RE: I thought recovery would be harder

I was the same. I was working from home 1 week post op and in the office 2 weeks post op. I planned it that way as I already knew recovery would be pretty easy. You can always go back to work early.

Unless someone is in a very physical job, I can't imagine taking 4-6 weeks off.

Topic: RE: What are you eating/doing Friday?

Good morning :)

I'm taking another van load of stuff to storage. You can't even tell I have taken so much away. I'm also working on a pile of stuff to donate. Tomorrow we are going to pick up our side of beef and then it will be a game of tetris to get it all in the freezer. I'm hoping we don't get as much snow as forecasted this weekend because we would like to look at another property (maybe two if I can sweet talk DH).

Post-op three years and ten.

Breakfast - protein bar

Snack - carrots and PB

Lunch - turkey sandwich

Snack - Greek yogurt

Dinner - roast beef

Snack - pudding

All water and vits.
