RNY vs Sleeve
The decision on what surgery you have is based on many factors. Liver size, scar tissue, GERD, and probably other factors I don't know about.
Typically the surgery of preference is RNY. Sleeves are done if there are factors that prevent an RNY from being performed.
I may be wrong, but I don't believe that BMI is a deciding factor in which surgery is done.

I had the Sleeve instead of the RNY - reason is that two years ago my heart attacked me, and i am on a whole bunch of meds.. including daily aspirin.
The meds will not absorb 100% with RNY but have more time be be absorbed in the sleeve. would i have preferred RNY ? Sure! but am doing great with the sleeve.
incidentally, most of my meds have been halved already due to the heath improvements since the WLS. so its a winner either way.
BMI was not a factor in my case.
Hope this answers a few of your questions as to why..
