Exercise - when did you start, what did you do?

Thanks Pauline. It sounds like you have a lot of fun with your dogs! I used to as well. Unfortunately she's been attacked a few times, and now I've been working hard with her on getting her resocialised and trusting other dogs. She's always on the offense, understandably, but walking her is just not "pleasant". It's work. Good work... but work.

We've made a ton of progress, and she's even made a couple of new dog friends! So there's hope. :)

Hi oneatatime...I really have no advice to give because I have the same question. I know physical fitness is extremely important for us to incorporate into our lives especially as we maintain our ideal body weight.

I've been walking most days with my husband, but when I am alone I bring along my phone and listen to a podcast. There is a WLS podcast that has some pretty good episodes on it that I always find interesting to listen to when I'm walking. http://www.weightlosssurgerypodcast.com/

Also, we have a bowflex in our workout room in our basement. I know I need to start strength training again it's just a matter of when.

In the past I have had so many gym memberships and yoga studio memberships that I was always enthusiastic about in the beginning but then fizzled out. I use to teach aerobics at one point as well, but again, just burned out.

So, I'm thinking this time is for life, so maybe I should try something I have never done before...like listening to my body and do something enjoyable and sustainable. I haven't figured out what that is, or will be, but god dammit it's gonna be fun and hopefully part of my lifestyle and not something I 'have' to do.

I'll keep you posted.

I've been trying to get into podcasts. Haven't yet. I'm still an old fashioned "prefer to read" kinda gal. Lol. Sometimes I really show my age. Hahaha.

Side note: I have a work project due Tuesday and I had to read a book for it. I thought maybe I'd spend 5 hours listening to it on Audible. I was even driving to Ottawa and back. But nooooo, I blocked off my weekend and read it this weekend instead. Lol. And am almost done my project. Yay!

So back to exercise... my sis reminded me I have a "bike trainer" at her place (I haven't moved it yet. Turns a regular bike into a stationary bike. It's super loud and I'm sure that is what ruined my tired, but may as well give it a whirl (literally!!). Going to pick it up this week!

I totally agree about needing a great long term plan though. Keep me posted for sure. :)

Glad you got your book and project done. (I love reading too!!)

Also about exercise, I think my walking will eventually turn into running. I use to run and really love the feeling...it's excellent. Of course I haven't run in years because I've been too heavy and it's very hard on the knees. I think I will know when I am ready and when my body will be ready because of how I felt before. So that's something I am thinking about that could be sustainable for me.

Also we are going to be getting a puppy in January. Talked to the breeder yesterday and the puppies should be born within the next two weeks. It's a malamute, so like huskies, they like to run. This could be a very good motivator for me. We actually have been thinking about a dog since we purchased the property up north (because there's a bear) but I think now, it could help me with my fitness!!

You may want to try skijoring in the winter with a Malamute. I have several friends who do that with their dogs and they have a great time.

I breed dogs as well. If you're going to run with your dog please wait until your pup is older and the growth plates are done growing. Forced running on pavement with soft bones and joints can cause serious long term osteopathic problems.

Short bursts of running incorporated with walking will be fine until that time. I did that with my lab and she and I were in the best shape of our lives.

I can't wait to get back to running with my dogs.

Hey Oneatatimes

I was told 8 weeks for slightly over 10lbs and 12 weeks before 8 started working out/playing hockey.

At 8 weeks I can start my aquafit again. The nice thing about that is that you control your resistance and how hard you work. If you need to take it easy, there are lots of other people that do that. I also like that it is only $22/month unlimited in Hamilton.

I also have a benefit that one my best girlfriends is a yoga instructor. She is going to start doing modified workouts with me so I can stretch but not activate my core this week.

You have some great benefits listed! A bestie who is a yoga instructor, and $22 unlimited through Hamilton. Fab. :)

Thanks for the details about the weight restrictions. I think I remember at my 1 month f/u that TWH has a 4 mth restriction for any core work. I definitely feel like I need the extra healing. But am ready to bring in some cardio and get moving!! Weights/resistance/ stretching would be good too.
