Antibiotics that is "take with food and water"

Hi folks,

I was prescribed meds the other day, and the pharmacist told me to take them "with food and lots of water." Ugh.

Here's the other problem: 3 times a day, every 8 hours. So I'm trying to space them out as much as possible, and I find I'm staying up late to take the last pill... and having to eat late with it.

It's only for 7 days, so part of me is saying "just suck it up, it doesn't matter long term if you get a few extra calories" although I'm trying hard to have less during to day to make sure I have a bit extra at night. This is day 3 of my med and I've been a bit high the past couple of days... and i know the late night eating isn't great, but I am trying hard with the meds.

Any suggestions? Other than taking them earlier... I unfortunately got shingles and would rather have a few days of bad eating than years of nerve pain... so I'm really trying to do the meds right. Fingers crossed.

Thanks all!

Hi D.,

Take the meds and get better. Follow the rules. It's only 7 days.

Just so you know, last week I had a UTI and the doc thought it may have been a kidney infection so he gave me a high dose of - something. Anyway, I had to take two pills a day but get this - I couldn't take any dairy two hours before taking the pills and 4 hours after taking the pills. So basically I had a very small window of time during the day to have dairy. When all we are eating is protein, it really sucked to not have yogurt, milk and cheese as part of a meal. Also, I couldn't have my multivitamin 2 hours before and 4 hours after the meds. So basically I ate dairy and took my multivitamin mid day for 7 days. Also went up north last weekend and had to remember all this **** It was challenging! Whew! So glad that is over and I do feel better. Urinary track infections suck...but I'm sure shingles are worse.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Oh dear, that sounds worse than my regimen. I'm glad you got through it and are feeling better. Yep, it's only a few days... I'll get through this! Thanks. :)

Oh yikes, the nerve pain must have been awful. I'm sorry you had that. That's the part I'm really trying to avoid.

Yep, going to follow the med rules and do my best with food. I do not want nerve pain...

thanks!!

I agree with the above posters. My FIL had shingles 2 years ago and still has pain from it. consider it a bump in the road and concentrate on the weight loss and routine next week when you are off the meds. Hope you're feeling better soon! What were your symptoms?

Yikes @ FIL still having pain 2 years later. I hope he has relief soon. I hear it's bad.

My obvious symptom was a rash across the left side of my abdomen. In restrospect, for a couple of days leading up to the rash, I was completely exhausted (for no reason), had back pain, a migraine and constipation out of the blue. When I read the symptoms of shingles once I figured out my rash Monday night, it all made sense.

I get monthly injections for severe asthma, and a potential side effect of the drug is shingles. That's why I put two and two together. Although when I called my case manager for the medicine (it's a highly regulated drug I have to go to an injection clinic for), I was the first patient she's ever heard of who's actually ever gotten shingles.

Go figure! Probably cause my immune system is compromised right now, post op. Who knows.

I remember you telling us about that drug at the meetup. The compromised immune system makes sense too. Hope you are quickly on the mend!

Oh no, sorry about the shingles.

Just take the meds and don't worry. I had pneumonia at 3 months post op and was on antibiotics for almost 3 weeks, and I was just sick with bronchitis for a month at 8 months post op. I just used my fitness pal to spread out the calories/carbs/protein to include the needed snacks and it was fine the first time, but the second time my weight loss stalled because the antibiotics upset my stomach so I ate crackers. It won't hurt to eat later as long as you don't go over your plan...or eat crackers, lol.

Hope you'll feel better soon.

Thanks Kathy. I'm definitely eating a bit differently... doing my best to stay on track and am mostly, but not like I was before. Off track a bit cause of the drugs and the schedule, and frankly a bit cause I'm exhausted and stupid emotional!!!

I am tracking everything and have never been so off track I've been worried. Phew. :)
