Can I just drive myself home?
I'm wondering if I can just drive myself home.
I'm a single mom and my two oldest are away at university. My youngest is only 11. My parents are getting a bit older and my sister works. I have a boyfriend but just together six months and not wanting him to take me home from the hospital. Basically, I am fiercely independent and hate to impose on people. It would be about an hour and a half drive.
I've had three kids and honestly, stayed in the hospital 24 hours for the last one and could have driven myself home.
How will I feel the day I go home? If it's just a bit of pain, I can make the drive. If I'm going to be on pain killers making me "impaired", I would never take the chance and just suck it up and ask my sister.
What are your thoughts?

Ask for help and get someone to drive you. You've just been through a major surgery. Anesthetic is still in your body, you may be on pain meds and I don't think you will feel well enough for a 1 1/2 hour drive.

In Ottawa they're very clear that you can't drive yourself home. In fact, they won't release you unless you have a responsible adult to accompany you home, even if you're taking a cab.
It's also worth nothing that there's a rule/law about waiting 48 hours (maybe 24) before driving if you've been taking narcotics or other strong pain killers...which is what you'll probably be given in the hospital.
I was very happy to have someone drive me home. Between the pain and the exhaustion, it was nice not to have to pay attention.

Youre still under the influence of narcotics and thats illegal to drive in that state.
Bumps and stuff arent easy to deal with on the way home - probably cant console yourself driving. You need to seek help from those around you.
I dont think the hospital will discharge you without that person taking you home being physically present

I was told pre-op absolutely no driving for 2-3 weeks after surgery. In any case had some metal staples closing trochar holes, and just sitting in a car with bumps and twists in road made them pinch. Such a relief when they were removed at 2 weeks.
Don't drive, you will be DUI with narcotics still in your system like others above say. Independent and self-sufficient you may be, but this time you must rely on help.
