Hospital Stay Question

For anyone having had surgery at Toronto Western I was wondering about the hospital stay. I know they have private and semi private room but has anyone been in the ward?

I just checked my insurance and they won't pay for much of anything. I was wondering if there is even a ward to be in? Most other hospitals I have stayed at does not have wards for post-op patients.

I know I am overthinking my upcoming surgery but I don't want to get stressed out about stuff. It is just another item to tick off my list.

When I had my pre-op appointment back in February they asked me about private and semi private and at that time I chose semi-private but can you choose neither?

I know you get whatever room you they put you into but my question is if there is even a ward?

There is. Its a room of 3 and 4 beds. Hpefully you get a private room. Even semi private annoys me as the other person usually has no regard for someone else being in their room

Oh Darn, I was hoping that they only had semi private at the worst. I can only imagine how insensitive other people can be.

I just looked it up.

The basic standard of care in a hospital (which is covered by OHIP) is a Ward Room. All hospitals in Ontario have Wards. If you have private insurance you can request semi private or private rooms at which point either you, or your insurance provider, pays the difference between the Ward or the requested room.

From experience, I have been put in a Ward Room, even with Insurance, because beds weren't available in semi private or private rooms.

I have no idea where you found the information but I am happy that you did! My experience was that post-op areas don't have wards but I am seeing that I am wrong.

Well they shouldn't have wards for post-op I say! People are recovering from surgery and should not have to deal with a bunch of others in their room... just my little rant.

I have had two major surgeries and both times I ended up in a ward even though I have insurance. To be honest the first day, I didn't even know where I was so I didn't care. One time I got moved to a semi private and we were so cramped and I felt we were on top of each other, I asked to go back to the Ward. It really felt claustrophobic in the semi.

Ok Good to know. I was thinking if I end up in a ward how much of it am I going to remember anyways. I will be focused on recovery as soon as I wake-up anyways. I supposed I will have to suck it up and deal with it. I hope the wards are full when I get there ... whenever that may be.

I have no private insurance so I was prepared for a ward room. I ended up in a semi private and it was fine. I was at Toronto Western.

I was not prepared to spend money on the room. It wasn't vacation for me. It was a hospital stay... and it served me just fine.

To each their own; know what you prefer and go with that.

Thanks for that. I think you are right; this isn't a vacation so why spend my money on it? Not like it will change the food I will NOT get...lol

That's exactly what I felt too. I've been a SAHM and my partner is self employed so no insurance here either! My sons bday is coming up so I would WAY rather spend money on that. TWH is $280 a night for semi and $380 a night for private. Like you said, it's not a vacation! I'm ok with sucking it up and they said they'll put you wherever they have space which could very well be private or semi private depending on the day. Also, you can switch at any time. At least at that's the policy at TWH so that's reassuring too. :)
