Complications Post Op

First I would like to thank Linda and Oneatatime for their honest posts I have debated since Friday whether I should post or not. I thing it is important to be honest and share my journey.

I had my surgery August 25th and the first week was tough but I was beginning to feel better adding purees into my daily intake, gaining energy and was happy. This began to change on Tuesday night I couldn't keep the puréed food down. I stopped the purees and went back to liquid. By Thursday the nausea and vomiting was worse and I couldn't keep anything down and I had abdominal pain. Friday I called my Centre but didn't reach anyone so I decided to go to Emergency. They admitted me and I have been in hospital since. I have inflammation and a partial blockage. Usually this happens within 7 days of surgery. I am a little unusual and the doctors are puzzled by this. For now I am under observation to see if the problem will resolve itself. Fingers crossed it will.

If you feel really unwell and are unable to drink fluids go to the hospital. Dehydration can happen quickly.

I don't regret the surgery I see this as a blip in my journey. Any surgery has risk but I hear all the positive results of others and I believe that outweighs the risk.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. I think it's important for all of us to understand the risks and benefits of WLS. I hope you are feeling better and can come home from hospital soon.

I'm glad you went to emerg. I know it can be a really tough decision, as we can all too often think "I'm going to tough through this." Dehydration, inflammation, inability to keep food or liquid down... these can be very serious complications if not looked after by our Bariatric team.

I'm glad your doctors and nurses are taking good care of you, and your family is by your side. I hope they figure out what's wrong soon so you can get back to healing and home.

What made me smile about your post is how silly we can become when trying to figure ourselves out. I'm so glad you went to the hospital because when we self-diagnose, you have a fool for a doctor.

When I had stomach pain, I thought it was from the surgery and it was a kidney infection that turned septic. It's hard to differentiate between a WLS complication and a normal illness - then it dawns on me that it's not my job. We know our bodies but we do need help from healthcare professionals that know more than we do.

Hydration and getting checked out - two important lessons to be reminded of. I hope it does resolve itself and if not, you're in the best place.

My thoughts and prayers are with you for speedy improvement.

Linda

I'm so sorry you're going through this, and thanks for being honest about it. It's important to share both the ups and the downs.

Sending prayers that you'll soon be on the mend.

Take care.

I'm so sorry that you are dealing with all that. I am very glad that you decided to go to Emerg. Hopefully they figure out why it is happening or at least that the inflammation and blockage subsides.

I think it is great that you are keeping a positive attitude too - that is half the battle.
