Sleeve vs. Roux En Y?

What are the deciding factors in whether you get a sleeve or the bypass? I was told we did not have a choice but rather the surgeon decided.

If anyone has some input into this I would really like to hear how this works.

TIA

My understanding with my centre (TWH) was that they do the RNY unless they can't due to medical issues. Statistically it leads to a higher % of excess weight being lost and is considered the 'gold standard'. There also seems to be a large number of people who get the sleeve and later have it revised to the RNY.

After my research, I felt strongly that that was the best bet for me (i know everyone is different, so please know that I am not poo-pooing the sleeve) and I made sure my surgeon knew that RNY was what I really wanted. I know that once they open you up there are some cases where they have to sleeve, and I agreed to that if necessary but when I woke I was happy to know it was the RNY that I got.

The sleeve was never an option for me due to my acid reflux, the sleeve can exacerbate reflux.

Same here. My esophagitis which was discovered during my scope ruled out sleeve for me which was my preference but RNY it is!

I have a small hiatus hernia and GERD. I wondered if that would mean that I would not be eligible for the sleeve. My guess is that it will be the bypass.

Thanks.

I had the sleeve done last week. I choose the sleeve and paid for it myself as I did not want to go through the whole bariatric process and be denied the sleeve. I just don't want my intestines rearranged. Lower risk of malabsorption issues. Research shows in 5 yr post op both surgeries have the same weight loss results. I also believe they are both tools. How much weight you loose is up to you.

I also had a hernia, that was fixed at the same time. I had mild GERD before surgery but no symptoms. I guess it was noted by my night time cough and scope.

2 week liquid pre op I lost 20.4lbs.

1 week post op Ive lost 14lbs.

I'm very pleased and well on my way. All the best!!
