I know it is different for everyone...but what are the most common tests you need to have before surgery? Who lets you know which ones you will need?

Hey there, congratulations on starting the process!

It really is all different for everyone, and I think to some degree, different by centre. Which centre are you going through?

Everyone has to have bloodwork done. I see you are already going for a sleep test. Some people go for an endoscopy, an ekg/ecg (not sure which). Can't think of what else!

There could be special cir****tances where you would go for other tests... like a chest X-ray if you're asthmatic, etc.

The nurse practitioner could decide depending on which centre you're at. The surgeon would always have a say at your consult, and depending on your centre that happens earlier or later.

Good luck!

When do you get told to do all these? Is it because of pre existing conditions ( no details I don't want to be intrusive).

At the first appointment after Orientation with the Nurse. She was the one that had all the paperwork ready. The colonoscopy is something that they don't necessarily do for everyone but I do have a pre-existing condition so we decided to do it as well. Good thing, because I did have polyps that needed to be removed.

Everything else I think is pretty standard.

I was lucky and only needed the blood tests. At TWH, if your neck measurement is more than 15" you have to have a sleep apnea test. The rest, I believe, are ordered for the individual determined as you go through the process and discuss your health history with the nurse practitioner.

Thanks ladies -- I don't have any issues really - except I cannot walk -- severe osteo which will need extensive physio, scopes and rehab after a loss of 100 pounds. For that I will need pain meds. My skeleton cannot take the weight anymore .... and so a great loss will help the Ortho surgeon repair some of the ligament damage for me. I should have done this 10 years ago but I just wasn't ready. The more I read about your successes the more sure I am that this is for me. Thanks all. Grateful!
