In Ontario there is a system to get it covered through ohip. It's free except for travel possibly and for optifast (liquid diet). There's a process that guy can read about here

You can also self pay for sleeve or lapband

The Toronto Western Hospital Bariatric Group are great!

The first step (of many) is a referral from your family doctor (it's done online).

I live in Ottawa.... There is a weight management clinic at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Site.

I am sure if you call your local hospitals or google weight management clinics in Brampton you will find one. BMI clinics etc.

You need a doctor's referal. There is a criteria you must have to qualify. OHIP covers the surgery.

The criteria is generally a BMI of at least 40.

Medical issues, high BP, diabetes, sleep apnea, chronic pain etc.

The process usually takes one year...

You have to attend a seminar, classes, meet with nurse practioners, dieticians, behaviourists, physicians etc.

Definitely worth the wait.

Hope this helps

Hi Sonia,

I'm in Mississauga, so close to you! Like others have said, it is done through OHIP.

You have to start with a conversation with your family doctor who will do a referral for you to the Ontario Bariatric Network (OBN).

Do you have a GP? Most know the process, but if yours doesn't, they just register through the site as a physician and can then refer you.

It takes about 15 minutes to complete the referral... my doctor did mine with me and gave me a print out.

Good luck!
