Hi Everyone. Just finished my last package of Optifast before my surgery tomorrow. My surgery is at 8:00 am at TWH so my wife and I took a room at the Chelsea Hotel. Even though I'm only coming in from Oshawa, I thought it would be better than trying to drive here for 6:00 am(who knows what nightmare may happen on the 401). We got a good deal through TWH AT $115/per night. It's not the Taj Mahal but it will certainly do.

I would like to thank everyone for their comments and posts on this website. I don't post a lot but I get something out of each and every one of them no matter how big or small.

As an alcoholic whose been sober for three years (it took me 8 years and 2 different treatment centres to get there) I find the similarities between weight loss and abstinence from alcohol incredibly similar. I can use many coping skills that I've learned through my addiction with this weight loss journey (especially the three weeks of Optifast). I'm proud to say that I never cheated once. I'm a 53 year old male who weighed 455 at the beginning of my Optifast and weighed in at 421 yesterday both weights taken at my doctors office. I know I'm only at the beginning of the process but I feel good about the future (with lots of hard work, lol)

One last thing, while reading through these posts, I notice that of lot of the people in this program are single mothers. It must be incredibly difficult to look after your families as well as go through this program. My hat is off to all of you. You have my upmost respect. I know, that in my own situation, I could never have gotten through this without a strong independent woman. How she stuck around during all my shenanigans is beyond me.

Enough of my soliloquy. Good luck to all and thank God we have resources like this website to help us through the rough times.

Good Morning Everyone! Just got home from TWH yesterday afternoon. Thanks for all your kind words and prayers, I really appreciated it. My surgery went very well. There was some concern that due to my large size and possible liver damage from alcohol abuse in the past that the RNY wouldn't be possible but apparently the 3 weeks of Optifast worked really well and I did get the RNY! My surgeon at TWH was Dr. Jackson. I can't say enough great things about him and his team. He came to see me personally 3 times each day in my room and there was always someone from "the team" dropping by to see how I was doing. He explained to me that I did have some scarring on the liver (cirrhosis) but not enough to stop my liver from functioning normally. As he explained, if I hadn't decided to do something about my alcoholism and weight, that I wasn't far from the point of no return with my liver. He said that if I stick to the program (and I plan to follow it to a tee!)I should be able to have a nice long retirement with my wife. I couldn't be more pleased with that prospect!

I see my family physician on Tuesday for a few follow up blood tests. My creatinine levels were a touch high but probably due to dehydration.

Once again thanks for everyone's kind words and thoughts and I look forward to sharing our experiences and journeys as we go forward.
