Did everyone need to go on a liquid diet Pre-op?

Does everyone need to go on a liquid diet pre-op? What is the thought behind this?

I was given a 10% loss goal and as of today (still 3-4 months from surgery) I am at a 16% loss.

Most do to shrink the liver as they move it during the process. Keep up the good work

No not everyone goes on the liquid pre-op diet. It depends if you have a fatty liver or not as the purpose of it is to shrink your liver and some people get the benefit of losing a bit of weight on it. They can tell this in your blood work that you submit.

Thank you,

I have done many blood tests and haven't heard anything about a fatty liver. I started at 275lbs, was given my 10% goal at 225, and am now at 191, I have my next appointment at the clinic Thursday so maybe I will ask.

They never told me anything either but I still had 2 weeks of opti. Also I was told at a support group I attend some surgeons automatically give opti as it's part of that surgeons routine.

Most weight management programs do have a 2-3 week liquid/Opti. They say it is to shrink the liver. I think it is to prepare you.

Fatty livers are found during ultrasounds/CT Scans & MRIs.

I have always had a fatty liver. Last CT Scan for kidney stones did not mention my fatty liver.

My 84 lb. weight loss may have contributed to that.

I got in on a cancellation and did not have to do any liquid diet. I had not lost anything before my surgery. All went well.

I would say it is more common than not. As others have said it is to shrink your level so the surgeon has better access to the area he needs to work on.

Have you had an ultra sound? That is where a fatty liver will show up.

Over 100 lbs lost! and 13 lbs below goal weight!
