Smoking tests

So, I had my last cigarette last August. Super proud of myself because not only did I manage to quit smoking after 15 years but I managed to quit while constantly surrounded by smokers. Today on a Bariatric facebook page, a post was made saying that they won't even let you have surgery if you live with people who smoke. Is this true? Will this smoking test they supposedly give you be effected if your exposed to 2nd hand smoke? I have to live with my parents and it's their house so I can't demand they smoke outside. And I can't afford to live on my own and pay for the costs associated with this surgery. Has anybody heard any info on this?

no.. this isn't true.. My husband smokes..and that is one of the things that I asked..

I quit smoking 5 days before surgery... they tested me once (the first time) i failed... i then got smart with my appts... but i actually did quit... havent had a smoke in almost 4 months which is awesome so definitely be proud of yourself... as far as the second hand, they wont deny you for it

Congratulations. You have a double-whammy - quitting smoking and learning how to change your diet. You have a lot to be proud of. I agree that it is just you that has to quit ... although it would be nice if those around you attempted to do the same for their own health and to support you in your own journey.

Sorry to highjack - does anyone know if they test for marijuana?

I used to smoke occasionally for MS symptoms but stopped almost a year ago, when I was referred to the program.

I'm now taking a new medication and it's causing severe gastric issues while I adjust. I so wish I could take some to help with these symptoms, but I'm not going to risk it.

I actually checked "yes" on the form at orientation and often wonder if that's why it took so long for me to get an appointment. And before they gave me said appointment, a nurse called to grill me about my marijuana use. I really hope that's not the case - they should encourage their patients to be honest about their health and habits.

In any case, no MJ for me but I'm curious as to whether anyone has been tested for it.

Don't smoke it and get an MMJ licence. I have one and don't smoke it. Nobody ever tested me for drugs prior to surgery and that's the only way they would see MMJ in your system.

Hi Caff, I took time off from the program (6 months to try to lose weight and get pregnant and then didn't do either (boo)) but when I had my phone call to get back in I said I had smoked pot and so when I saw the nurse I told her the last time I smoked was Thanksgiving (two weeks prior) and she did test me for THC. The test was negative which I suspected. Anyway, I guess don't rule it out is what I'm saying because they may test you.

I stopped smoking March 5th 2017 in preparation of roux en y gastric bypass. I had my first nicotine urine screen in May and tested at 37 ng/ml for nicotine and 10 ng/ml for continine This was done May 17th, 2017.

Everything else i.e. anabasine, nornicotine, 3OH continine tested within normal limits or 'negative'. They considered the screen positive and 'consistent with having used nicotine products within 1 week of testing'

My second screening was done June 1, 2017. Nicotine level tested at 7 ng/ml continine was now also in the 'negative' along with all other chemicals. Results considered positive with the note 'consistent having used nicotine products within 1 week of testing'.

Whether or not you are positive depends heavily on YOUR doctor and what test they use. I smoked nothing from March 5th until last night and failed 2 nicotine urine screens due to nothing more than exposure to 2nd hand smoke. It is physically impossible to be a smoker and test negative for anabasine. My doc don't care...the nicotine test is positive...he will not schedule. I have to be at or below 2 ng/ml to test negative.
