Opti and Metameucil

I have read that some take some form of additional while taking their Opti. I looked through both the TWH and Guelph information and couldn't find any direct reference (may have missed it). Is it necessary? Do the fibre capsules work? Any feedback is appreciated.

Metamucil works great while on Optifast. Liquid in, liquid out happens the first few days and Metamucil helps to soak up the excess liquid in the bowel and then many end up constipated on it so it will also help to relieve constipation. When I did Optifast, the SF capsules didn't exist so we were told to add the Metamucil to each of our shakes but now with the capsules, people are using them, just have to make sure they are the ones with no sugar in them. I don't know the number people use but I had heard 5 capsules but not sure if that is per day or per shake. Hopefully someone else will chime in that used the capsules.

Many thanks Tracey. I can also just do the powder - either with the shake, or on its own with my extra water. I just remember the older commercials where it turned into a congiled, thick gel. I know it's improved, but memories prevail (lol).

I was told to put 1 tbsp in each shake so then you taste nothing. If you get the powder, make sure it's the plain one as they sell all different flavours now too. The capsules are easy but I just don't know the exact number per shake.

I used restoralax - I put a capful in one of my shakes each day. I have started doing that again post surgery as I do have some constipation issues ... it helped and although it is not in the written documents from Guelph, the nurse told me to do this when she gave me the shakes. Good luck to you - you are in home stretch ....

Just found an old thread and it is 5 capsules per shake as per Ottawa's instructions. You could always start with less and know the max is 5 per shake. I found day 3 and 4, the diarrhea was the worse so was happy when they told me to take it as it resolved that issue quickly.

I used Metamucil powder in my water when I was on optifast for 2 reasons:

  1. It helped with the extreme issues I was experiencing. For the first few days I felt like I lived on the toilet (sorry, TMI).
  2. It really helped to fill me up a bit between shakes. I found I was extremely hungry for the first 4-5 days and the Metamucil really assisted me.

The orange flavour was a really nice change from the shakes as well.

I used Metamucil powder and it still thickens...I added tons of water and drank it fast.

Eew! Where's the "Dislike" button? (lol)

Thanks everyone. Dropping off the Vitamin K prescription at Shoppers on the way home and will pick some up. Had my last supper on Sunday with the family. Not hungry, very happy but still "mourning". How silly is that! Should be happy that I won't be thinking what to cook for supper.

Much appreciated.

It's funny I missed the shakes when they were done. It took all the guess work out of it. I knew what I was always eating or in our case drinking. You got this Linda...you will get excited again soon enough.
