Day of surgery

My surgery is scheduled Monday at St.Mike's.  What happens when I arrive at the hospital? Do I have tests at all? Or just prepped for surgery? The nurse went over some of it at my preoperative op appt but she talked so fast and there was so much info that I was overwhelmed and forgot most of it.

Also, who filled out your disability paperwork to be off work?  The surgeon? Your GP? I called my centre to ask but the haven't called me back yet.

Thank you!!

No tests, just surgery prep!  I had the surgeon fill out my forms but he told me I could have had my GP do it.  I thought why bother making an appointment for that when I'm going to be sitting in front of the man doing the surgery!?  He did it no problem.

I was at TWH but once you got into your gown they take your vitals, do a MRSA swab, ask questions.....then you wait and the surgeon comes in to talk to you.  I had to draw on my belly .... weird....then I was moved to a comfy seat where they put in my IV line and waited there till I walked to the OR....I thought that was weird too but hey.

Good luck to you, all you have to do is be the patient....they do the hardwork!

Over 100 lbs lost! and 13 lbs below goal weight!

Thank you for all of the helpful info.  I will bring my papers to the hospital then and if there is an issue I will make an appt with my GP to get it filled out.

Thanks again!

I had surgery at St Mikes on December 5th, I was the first one on the list for surgery with my surgeon so I was there at 5:45 am, there were probably about 20 others waiting for different surgeries. Once they called my name, I was taken to a room with a chair, asked to take off all my clothes and put on a shower cap and this purple gown which they connected to a warming device, they had me keep my socks on and they gave me a pair of blue booties as well. I had to wash my abdomen with a special moistened and soapy sponge. I had someone come in and draw blood and put in an IV, I had already done an MRSA test weeks prior at the request with my family doctor.  Another nurse came in and did vitals and took assessment of of all my belongings and tagged them so they could be brought to my room. They told the friend who was with me what to expect in regards to times and that the surgeon would come talk to her once I was in recovery. After a bit of a wait, I was escorted to the OR waiting area. My case was a little different as I never met with the surgeon. I met with the anesthesiologist, he went over his part in the process and when it was finally time, I walked down to the OR holding my own IV bag. The room was nothing like you see on tv. I had to awkwardly get up on this table that was fairly high up and then I was strapped down. There was about 12 people in the surgery room. One of the assistants had everyone gather around me and gave a brief report and soon after A mask was placed over my face and the next thing I remember I was in recovery. In regards to paperwork, when I was discharged I got a write up indicating I had surgery and a list of the medication I was given, and a hand written note stating I was to be off work for 4-6 weeks and I was not to lift anything over 10 lbs.

Who is your surgeon? I look forward to hearing how things went, good luck to you!

MRSA is a staph bacteria infection that can occur in many areas of the body but is tough to treat as it is antibiotic resistant. They do a nasal and rectal swab to test for it. It can be easily spread and could take a long time to get rid of if tested positive.
