Hi friends! I've always donated blood but haven't in about a year. I am almost 7 months out and down over 100lbs! My question is - can we donate blood? We being post op WLS patients. I don't have any deficiencies and can't think of why we couldn't but wanted to check with the pros here :)

Thanks!

Nikki

I would  NOT.

Wait a few years or discuss with your center.  Your body is already under stress plus you might not know your iron/ferritin stores and donating may cause issues.

I went through Guelph and they told us to never donate blood because you may not be able to build back up your iron and other things like you could before. Definitely check with your centre first.

Same advice as I got at Guelph!

My surgeon commended me for giving blood in the past, but said, "Now you need to keep your iron for yourself".

At my 2 year anniversary appointment I asked about donating blood. At Guelph they tell us you can never give blood again but I thought since I'm 2 years out and stable, taking my vitamins regularly it could be ok.  They said no.  It's just to hard for us to replenish what we lose when we give blood.

Funny enough I had a really weird hypoglycemic day about 2 weeks ago.  It hadn't happened to me for at least a year. I didn't think I ate or drank any differently than usually but my blood sugar was extremely low and I felt terrible for almost a whole day.  I didn't feel better after drinking water, didn't feel better after a tuna and chick pea salad, didn't feel better after taking a gravol.  What made me feel better was rice.  I needed some carbs in a bad way.  That day really reminded me how important it is to keep your diet and supplements balanced, timed right and complete.  Giving blood would cause a real challenge to blood sugar, hemoglobin and hydration.
