Two surgeries at once?

During the process of preparing for surgery a medium sized ovarian cyst was discovered.  Due to its characteristics, the Dr recommends surgical removal.

i have my final Dr visit with the Bariatric program soon and otherwise expect to be cleared for surgery. The nutritionist and social worker have already signed off.

Has anybody ever heard of having Bariatric surgery at the same time as another needed unrelated procedure?  It would be great if I could go under only once and have both surgeries.  It's all in the same general area!

Of course I will discuss this with Dr but just wondering if anybody has knowledge of this?

Thanks in advance.

Not often. I was having gall bladder issues before my rny and they wouldn't do both together. It just adds potential complications. Never hurts to ask though

Thanks Leslie. Did you have to have the gall bladder out before your Bariatric surgery?  I'm concerned this is going to delay my whole process.

No did not. Think it is something you need to speak to your surgeon about - re how urgent. Most important to look after yourself

I have never had to have any surgeries other than my tonsils when I was six.  So I really have no idea, but i would think that these 2 surgeries require very different incisions and surgeons, so I would think 2 separate procedures.  But as mentioned, it doesn't hurt to ask.

RNY Jan 12, 2017 Lost 137 lbs but regained 60.

77 lbs lost and counting!

Losing the regain! I got this!

There have been some people on here that have had their gallbladder out at the same time as WLS.  But not all of the surgeons will do it.  The only way you'll know for sure, is to talk to the Dr and ask about it.  They may want to contact the Dr. you saw for the cyst before they decide.

I had my gastric bypass and gall bladder out at the same time. It is easier to go under once. I had complcations with my gall bladder surgery (I'm still suffering) but that wasn't because it was done at the same time. It was because my gall bladder was so bad from my issues with it, it had infused itself onto my liver. It should have been out years ago. Talk to your Dr they will tell you the best course. Best of luck to you!

I appreciate your replies, thank you!  The Dr cleared me for surgery today and said the cyst would not affect surgery. I will have to see what the surgeon says when I meet with him/her.  I'm pretty sure it will be a separate procedure though.
