How do you deal financially with the time off after surgery?
Hello everybody! I'm new here!
I have been thinking about WLS for years now. I've watched countless people go through their journey, done my research, and have finally decided that it is for me!
I was referred on May 30, 2016 and had my orientation on July 4, 2016 at St. Joe's in Hamilton.
My question for all of you, is how did you pay your bills for the 6-8 weeks required for your recovery?
I have a lot of bills, no spouse and it is not financially feasible for my mother to pay for everything.
I'm 25 years old, just finished paramedic school, so I don't have any insurance or benefits.
My current job as patient transfer and event medic require heavy lifting so I'm worried I'll require the full two months to heal before going back to work.
Any advice?!
Thank you!!
Hi and welcome to an amazing forum. You will find this forum very supportive and informative.
By the time you get to the surgery stage approx a year would have gone by and you will have been with your current job long enough to qualify for EI short term benefits and on a plus to compensate for the reduced income you have time to save up. For the past 18 months I have been putting aside 1 days pay per month so that will be my cushion waiting on my EI benefits to kick in.
best of luck
You can apply for EI Sick Benefits. You will have a two period that you won't get any money for and could have to wait up to 5-6 weeks to get any money. If you speak to those that you owe money to and explain that you are off work waiting for sick benefits most will give you some extra time to pay them.

I work freelance, and I planned to take 8 weeks off. Because I had a year prior to surgery, I cut back and saved liked crazy and took extra hours to make a few extra dollars and banked it all in my emergency fund. I also watched the sales and bought the things I knew I would need after surgery the six months' prior on sale (ie: protein powder, shakes, canned goods, and stuff I could freeze).
If you work overtime, will they let you take lieu time instead of money? That might be one way to build up some extra time off. You should also get at least two weeks vacation ... not the funnest, but you can use it as part of your time off.
