Hi All,

I am currently in the screening process for having bariatric surgery, I have my dietician and social work appointments booked for September.  My referring doc feels that I should have roux en y surgery as it's the gold standard but I have a friend who as had the duodenal switch surgery with great success and the more I read about it the more I think it may be the way to go.....just wondering if anyone else had thoughts or experience on one vs the other.

Thanks

Hello

Good to see you back and that things are moving along for you. I'm not certain that your input about the surgery you want really matters much.  As far as I am aware they ( the surgeons) make the decision based on your current health status.  With that said , I know 2 people who were given the RNY and told at that time that at a later date they may need to have the DS, which they are both in the process of getting at the moment.

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me......if they knew that DS would likely be needed.....why didn't they just do that ???!!!   I suppose it's more involved and used as a secondary option ???? Not sure

Not all centres and doctors do the DS. In Ontario you have to go with what the doctors suggests based on your medical conditions.

Ds is very hard to come by now unless your Bmi is above 60.
