Hair Loss and Excess Skin

Hi!

I'm interesting in knowing people who have surgery, what your experience was with hair loss. I'm trying to make peace if it happens to me, that it will regrow! I have thin hair as is, and I know its a small price to pay, but I'm sure none of us really want to lose or have our hair thin out.

Wondering if any of you had experience or not with hair loss after surgery. When did it start, and when did it stop.

Love to hear from people who didn't have any hair loss either. Gives me slight hope...lol From what I've read, it doesn't seem to happen to everyone. Not sure what the percentage is to who has hair loss and who doesn't but I'm curious about what any of you have experience since surgery.

Also, I am in interested in how people are dealing with excess skin. I'm far from surgery, but I do worry about it and I'm sure everyone who is going though this and has gone through this, worried about what your body would look like afterwards.

I have almost 200lbs to lose to get to my goal weight. I can only imagine how much excess skin there will be. I've seen enough videos and read enough to know even if you exercise regularly that will only go so far.

Anyone lose 150 lbs plus who didn't have huge problems with excess skin? Is plastic surgery inevitable?

Any insight would be very helpful and appreciated.

Hi,  I will be a year out from my surgery this Sunday:). Hard to believe.  I have lost 144lbs and feel terrific.  It was the best decision I have ever made for myself.

I started to shed hair around the 3d month post-op.  It was really heavy from month 3-6 around month 7 it slowed and stopped.  I lost A LOT of hair.  However, I was the only one that noticed.  You don't go "bald" but you probably will lose some. I knew it was going to happen.  I knew it was going to happen but nothing can prepare you for it.... It is scary and horrible BUT it does eventually stop!  I take biotin everyday and if I'm honest I really don't know if it helps with hair growth.  I had hair down my back and I recently cut it into a short bob.... I am loving it.  Don't let the hair thinning scary you... The surgery is TOTALLY worth it!! And your hair does grow back.

Loss skin?  Yes I have it.  You can't loss 100+ pounds and not expect to have some.  Again, surgery still totally worth it.  I have surgery booked for Sept to have a tummy tuck and arm lift.  I started working out everyday around month 3 and that has helped tone and reshape but doesn't fix skin.  Hope this helps... Best of luck to you!

I'm glad to hear you are doing so well, and have no regrets doing it. Reassures me.

Yeah, I'm sure I'll be like you as well, even expecting hair loss, probably won't prepare me for it either.

May I ask how much  for a tummy tuck and arm lift? If you don't want to post publically you can PM or I understand if your uncomfortable with telling me.

I've done a little reseach about plastics cost, but can't find a lot!

I know I have no idea how I wil look after weight loss, but tummy tuck seems inevitable. Or the panniculectomy at the very least.

Thank you for reply.

Hello again,

i have no problem saying what I am paying.  I decided to go out of pocket because the Dr's in my area (London) that will work with OHIP has a huge wait.  One had a 4 year wait.  I wanted it done sooner.  I am having a fleur de lis tummy tuck (vertical and horizontal t scar ) and arm lift... Together is was $15,200.00 that included everything.

Its a lot!  It's a car.... But I think it will be worth it. I know it will be worth it :)

Yikes at price and at huge wait times!  4 years...well that sucks since I  am from the London area as well.

Are you seeing a Doctor outside of London or just self paying for a Doctor in the London area?

I'm going to have save for years...lol

I will say, although this is a concern down the road, and its hard not to think about all the stuff that I will be going through post op and what not, I'm far from there, and should try and tackle what's in front of me. Be time to worry about plastic sugery down the road!

I agree,  just focus on your surgery and recovery and losing weight!  You'll do great!!

I am seeing Dr. Evans in London.  Have met him for a consultation and I felt very comfortable with him.  I have friends that have had procedures done by him and they are happy.  Plus my family Dr. Recommended him if I was going "out of pocket route".

Best of luck to you!  Exciting times ahead!

Thanks!

I will keep that name in my memory bank for way down the road!

If its not to much to ask, I'd love to know how your surgery goes?

I can imagine when/if the times come for plastic surgery I'd rather stick closer to home surgery wise if possible.

Hi,

Congrats on the weight loss, that's awesome!

Has the hospital covered your arm lift? I was told at OH that they would cover tummy tuck (given you meet the criteria), but not the legs or the arms.

Sorry but i am unsure what is or isn't covered.  I have chosen to pay out of pocket and not go through OHIP.

Most likely your hair will start falling out (a lot) at 3 months.  Only you will really notice.  It will stop around 9 months, and my experience is that my hair is thicker than it was before surgery.  You will have excess skin if you lose 200lbs.  No one likes it, but that is the reality.  Buy good spanx and save for plastics if it really bothers you.  If it helps almost everyone at 2 years postop says that they would have the surgery again.  I am in that group.  I love feeling strong and moving, instead of alway lumbering about and looking for the nearest place to sit down.  Hope this helps.
