Sleep Test
Hi Em!
I went through Guelph, and they use the "STOP Bang" test as a screen to see if you need the sleep apnea test. You can google this, it appears to be standard screen. This is the one thing that took the most time of all the tests. I did not believe I had sleep apnea, AT ALL, was not on my radar before this. I did snore for sure, but always had lots of energy, did not feel sleepy during the day, had no other "symptoms". I had the test, and they told me my sleep apnea was severe, so had to get a CPAP. Had to have it for surgery, because you are on your back for surgery and recovery, it is important, I can see that now. They want to reduce any risk they can. I live near London, had my testing done at Bluewater Sleep Disorder Clinic in Sarnia I took almost 2 months for the follow up appointment,errghh...slowed me down...
After losing 170 lbs, yeah! It was recommended that I get tested again, because it is a medical condition, and it is in your file. Apparently the weight loss helped my case, it is now so mild I no longer need a CPAP.
So it depends on the centre, for sure, and I guess, I just wanted to share that sometimes ya can't tell until they test you!
Good luck to you, this trip is a blast!
Dr. Glazer asked me if I snored and how my sleep was and I told him it was okay and he never pursued it any further. I never had anyone measure my neck or anything like that. He did not pursue the questions any further than that. I am not sure how he picks who needs to have a sleep study done as there was a woman in front of me that went in and he did send her for one and she did not seem much different looking than I did but then again maybe she had issues sleeping or snoring not sure. I actually was curious to see if I snored because my husband said I did but I did not think that I really did LOL So I took my phone and recorded myself on a few different nights and I will say that you could hear me breathing but not really a snore. I did it on a few different nights. Also, I have a fit bit and when I look at the sleep reports is shows when you wake and all that and I usually score a quality of sleep in the 90%'s. How accurate that may be I dont know but it at least gave me some kind of guide that I could refer to to see how I felt the next day and how my sleep quality might have been and see if there was a connection. There is criteria as the others have said that they follow so you really won't know if you might need on until you see the internist. However, I have heard of people just doing one on their own anyway so as not to delay the process. Good Luck
