Birth control after RNY and after age 40

Hi all,

I have a doctors appointment on Thursday, but thought I would ask here first.  I am 42 years old.  Tomorrow is my one year surgiversary.  I have lost 109 lbs from when I started two weeks of Opti.  Anyway, I have recently met a wonderful man.  He is sweet and charming and wonderful.  This might be TMI but I have always been the best friend and never the leading lady.  Now I am and am concerned about birth control.  I am wondering about taking the pill after RNY and after 40.  Anyone have any info they could share?

Thank you!!

My surgeon recommends always using two forms of birth control after RNY.  Malabsorption could interfere with the pill.

2 forms is the usual recommendation.  You could ask our doctor about an IUD as that one seems to be very popular.  Do you plan on having children?  If not then I'd suggest getting a tubal ligation done so you don't have to worry about any forms of birth control.  At 40, I was definitely done having children so that was my birth control choice.

Malabsorption could be an issue with the pill, so you shouldn't consider it. For ladies over 35, hormonal birth control is higher risk anyways, so I wouldn't recommend going that route. Paraguard is a non-hormonal IUD that could be a great option for your situation. Speak to your doctor about your options.

Before surgery, I met with the nurse at the bariatric clinic.  She told.me to stop the pills and switch to depo provera shot which you get every three months.  Some insurance plans like mine don't cover it though unless it's for another condition in which you need a Dr's note. I just pay out of pocket for it.
