Hi there,

Just wondering if there's a certain amount of weight or what's the average amount of weight loss you're supposed to have lost post-op?

I asked my surgeon how much calories to take in each day and he said everyone is different and everyone will lose differently.

But just wondering what the  average amount of weight loss the first month post-op.

Thanks,

Jen

We are all different and all depends on starting weight.  This has been posted many times over the years.  I find I lost much faster than this but it is just a guideline.

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS!

While you will lose weight in the first few months after bariatic surgery, you reach your maximum weight loss in 12 to 18 months.  Here is what you can expect to lose post op!

10 lbs. in first 10 days
15 to 25 lbs. in 6 weeks
25 to 35 lbs. in 3 months
35 to 45 lbs. in 6 months
60 lbs. or more in 1 year
70 lbs. or more in 18 months

For patients weighing 250 to 300 lbs.
10 to 12 lbs. in first 10 days
15 to 25 lbs. in 6 weeks

Thanks Tracey,

That gives me a good guideline to follow.  I'm doing pretty well right now.

I worry a lot so this has helped a lot.

Thanks,

Jen

Check out the OH Post-Op Planner, if you have not done so already. It was pretty accurate for my loss. Most people lose about 50% of their excess weight by the six month mark.

I had my surgery in November/15 and as someone new to this life changing experience as well I was very stressed and worried in the beginning about the weight and weighed myself everyday etc and it is a lot to have on your mind.  Keep in mind everyone is different and the weight will come off as long as you are following your guidelines.  I religeously use my fitness pal to track what I am eating and how many carbs and calories I'm taking in.  I have lost 78lbs since nov when I had my surgery but what I have lost others might not lose as much or more.  It's a balancing act that you will get the hang of.  I keep my daily calories around 650-700, protein at 70-80g and carbs under 30g but I also go to the gym on a daily basis and burn anywhere from 400-600 calories when I'm there.  It has taken me since November to finally get into a routine and familiar with what I should and should not have to get my protein in but try not to stress and compare yourself to others it will come off you are just still very new to all of this and your body hasn't adjusted to the changes you are making.  My centre also told me not to worry about calories and carb intake but for myself to consistently lose weight and feel good I keep my levels at what I posted above.  Everyone is different and you will get the hang of this just try and relax and enjoy the new changes you are experiencing.  Hope this helps!
