surgery cancelled due to blood coagulation
Just thought I'd share this with people going for surgery. On my 2nd week of optifast I got a really bad gout attack. I had used apple cider vinegar in the past to relieve pain I called the surgeon himself and asked if it was ok to use it. He said it should it be if it helped before and also recommended colchicine. I might have over done it because the gout pain was really bad. During that time I had to go for blood work for pre op. The Fri before surgery I had the doctor call me to cancel the surgery because of my blood anti coagulating. It took me couple days to realize it was the apple cider vinegar that caused this. I now got a new surgery date as my blood work was all good just the very next day. I have to do optifast all over again and I hope it's not going to bad as the first-time. Can anyone relate with this. As in gout from optifast or having surgery rescheduled? If so any advice. Thank you. My doctor is klien at humber river.
I'm pre-op and haven't yet "enjoyed" opti nor have I experienced gout but I'm sorry to hear you went through that. I imagine it was a real disappointment and p-off :( I too have dr Klein at hrrh. Do you mind sharing your timeline? I've just passed the appt with Dr Glazer and I'm waiting for my next appt with Dr Klien to get the opti and surgery date. Good luck and I look forward to hearing how it goes :) cheers!

Thanks for the reply. I saww glazer on Dec 11. I called kliens office the same week. I got that appointment for January 26th to see the surgeon. Surgery date was supposed to be on March 9th. I also had to do a month of optifast. I lost a lot of weight in that month 37 to be exact. Rapid weight loss causes gout. My new date is on may 16th and another month of optifast. Yuck.
Here's a tip when you call klien office ask for Debbie she's great. She does all the bookings. Keep me posted.
Thanks for the tip - I spoke to Debbie, she was very nice and helpful, thank you!
Wow, you are truly a warrior - a month of opti and then to have gout and have surgery put off, and now to do another month of opti - your determination and courage is admirable!
Thanks for sharing your timeline with me. Good luck with everything, keep me posted on how it goes :)

I had gout about 2 weeks post op. They said it was from the rapid weight loss. It was extremely painful and of course occurred on a Sunday. Good thing my family doctor could see me on Monday and I got the prescription for colchicine right away. If you are prone to having gout you may want to keep an extra set of pills handy in case it flares up again.
Never heard of using apple cider vinegar. I would think the sugar would be too high thus throwing off your ketosis. Definitely not good post op.
Good luck with your next surgery date!
